Crashes Block Both I-5 and Hwy-99

Sacramento area freeways were blocked for the second day in a row Wednesday morning.

The first crash occurred just after 4 a.m. along northbound I-5 near Laguna Blvd in Elk Grove. The driver of a tanker truck struck another truck causing the tanker to overturn and spill a large amount of diesel fuel onto the interstate. The driver of both trucks were taken to local hospitals for their injuries.

Cosumnes River Fire Department reported all lanes open and back to normal at 1:55 a.m.

The second crash occurred just before 4:30 a.m. along northbound Highway 99 near Sheldon Rd in Elk Grove. The driver of a big rig struck a passenger car causing the rig to jackknife spilling debris onto both the northbound and southbound lanes.

Approximately eight vehicles including a California Highway Patrol vehicle struck the debris in the southbound lanes causing damage.

Both sides of the highway were blocked while crews removed the debris and towed away the big rig.

All lanes are now open.

Today’s incidents come on the heels of Tuesday mornings big rig crash that blocked several lanes of southbound I-5 in Downtown Sacramento.
