For ten years, Sacramento punk rock band Banger has been carving out their place in the underground music scene, combining the raw energy of old school punk with thrash metal intensity and classic rock influences reminiscent of AC/DC. What started as an unconventional Craigslist connection has evolved into a tight-knit quartet that’s steadily building their reputation both locally and beyond.
The Beginning
The story of Banger began with drummer Brian’s Craigslist ad, where he described himself as a “highly functional alcoholic drummer looking for band members to start an original punk rock band.” Guitarist and lead vocalist Bill answered the call, and the two musicians got to work laying the foundation for what would become a decade-long musical journey.
Both founding members brought significant experience from Sacramento’s punk scene. Bill had previously fronted Identity Crisis, a band that gained recognition in the Sacramento punk underground during the 1980s. Meanwhile, Brian had honed his drumming skills with the group Snub Nose plus a handful of cover bands.
Finding the Right Chemistry
While the core partnership between Bill and Brian remained solid, Banger experienced some lineup changes over the years as they searched for the right musical chemistry. Today, the band has settled into what they believe is their definitive formation.
The current lineup features Bill on guitar and lead vocals, with Brian anchoring the rhythm section on drums. Steve, a transplant from Texas, holds down the low end on bass guitar, bringing his own regional influences to the Sacramento sound. Completing the quartet is Corey on guitar, who also splits his time as a member of local band Nova Sutro, adding another layer of musical connection to Sacramento’s tight-knit scene. The band members express a newfound confidence that these are the correct four people to carry Banger forward, suggesting that the chemistry they’ve been seeking has finally crystallized.
Building a Reputation
Banger has strategically built their reputation by serving as support act for more established touring punk bands. They’ve shared stages with notable acts including Michael Graves (former Misfits vocalist), Doyle (Misfits guitarist’s band), and legendary punk outfit US Bombs. These opening slots have provided valuable exposure and helped the band refine their live performance skills in front of diverse audiences.
The band’s commitment to live performance recently took them to one of punk rock’s most legendary venues. Last week, Banger played The Whisky a Go Go in Los Angeles, adding their name to the long list of bands that have graced the historic Sunset Strip venue’s stage.
Music and Future Plans
Fans can find Banger’s music across all major streaming platforms. For vinyl enthusiasts and collectors, the band has contributed tracks to various compilation albums, keeping alive the punk tradition of supporting the broader scene.
Looking ahead, Banger is preparing to release their full-length album “Common Mischief,” which promises to showcase the full range of their sound that blends punk aggression with thrash metal power and classic rock sensibilities.
After a decade of persistence, lineup changes, and steady growth, Banger appears to have hit their stride. With the right members in place and new music on the horizon, this Sacramento punk quartet seems poised to make an even bigger impact in the years to come.
