ABC10, in proud partnership with Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Greater Sacramento Area, has launched a special “Stand With Kids” fundraising campaign to support kids in the region and inspire the community to invest in our youth. During the month of June, the community is encouraged to donate to the local nonprofit to help fund training for mentors and activities for “Bigs” and “Littles.” In operation since 1964 and serving youth in Sacramento, South Placer and Yolo counties, Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Greater Sacramento Area works to match local volunteer mentors, or “Bigs,” with kids ages 7-18, the “Littles.” Beyond supporting mentorship, donated funds also go toward much-needed resources for “Littles,” their parents and families, and can be made here.

“The Greater Sacramento region is one of the most diverse regions in the country, and the youth in our community reflect that,” said Risa Omega, ABC10 President and General Manager. “At ABC10, we have a long history of giving back to the communities we serve. We are proud to stand with all the deserving kids in the region, because we know a bright and prosperous future starts with them.”

There is a proven positive impact when kids feel seen and represented by people they look up to outside of the home. Studies have found that after 18 months of Bigs and Littles spending time together, the Littles were 46% less likely to begin using illegal drugs and 52% less likely to skip school as compared to kids not enrolled in the program.

And, according to the Sacramento County Children’s Coalition, one-third of children in the Sacramento region live in single parent households. The resources and programs provided by Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Greater Sacramento Area assist parents who need extra support for their kids outside of the home.

“We know the summer months can be a difficult time where youth become disconnected from the systems of support they have access to while on campus,” said Jacob Peterson, President and CEO of Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Greater Sacramento Area. “Being matched in the Big Brothers Big Sisters program can help keep them connected to positive, caring adults who can continue to support their development, work on personal and academic goals and build their confidence going into the upcoming year. We are excited to partner with ABC10 and the broader community to help make this opportunity happen for more local youth in need.”

To help raise awareness about the important cause and the positive impacts of mentorship, ABC10 will air weekly news reports about the “Stand With Kids” fundraising initiative.
