In the midst of running up and down the West Coast leg of their “Shelter Live” tour, Porter Robinson and Madeon made an exciting stop in Sacramento last weekend.
On Saturday, Dec. 3, the electric duo played at the McClellan Center, an old airport hanger which provided a warehouse vibe that, in contrast to most their concerts, put more emphasis on their live show as an intimate experience rather than a party.
For those lucky enough to witness one of these shows on tour, it is safe to say one experienced a collaboration of a lifetime. Both Madeon and Porter insist that this very special collaboration has a shelf life. They wanted to do something special for their fans before going back to working on their own solo projects. However, the magic in the air was undeniable as fans filled the venue to see “Shelter Live.” It is the culmination of a dedicated following the two have garnered over the years, coming together at the moment their single “Shelter,” first came to light.
Sacramentans got their first taste of the duo at TBD Fest two years ago when Porter and Madeon were touring individually for their “Worlds” and “Adventure” albums, respectively. They were electronic dance music acts that were more focused on having a live set set made up entirely of their own music, rather than playing a taste-making DJ set filled with their own songs, remixes and their favorite songs of the moment by other artists.
Both Porter and Madeon created fictional worlds in their solo projects, using their music to tell a story with visuals to match. The duo then used Shelter Live to tell their musical story with a ton of visuals, highlighting them on stage as the main characters of the show.
Now that the West Coast leg of their North American run of the tour is coming to an end, the duo will go overseas to Europe and Australia. This writer, however, has an ankling suspicion that the two will prolong the tour over music festival season, since things tend to pick up around March and into the summer months.
For now, fans will have to reel in their Shelter Live memories and wait to hear what comes next from both Porter Robinson and Madeon, whether it be together or on their own respective terms.
