For the Kids this Summer: Museums Offer Multitude of Camps & Activities

With summer just around the corner, signing up kids for fun summer camps is heating up right about now. Rather than the traditional concepts of summer camp, parents are can view local museums with unforgettable hands-on activities. From learning more about art to archery to creepy crawlers to deep space, a number of Sacramento area museums and destinations are offering special summer classes, camps and activities.

Below is a listing of activities available this summer at various Sacramento area museums this summer. Space is limited and camps are filling up fast, so parents are encouraged to connect with the individual museum(s) of interest to explore availability.

Aerospace Museum of California

Summer campers will visit the United States Coast Guard Station at McClellan Field. Museum staff will also arrange for each student to take a free flight with a registered pilot.

California Automobile Museum

At the California Automobile Museum’s five day experience, campers will learn about the history, science, and design that shapes our cars, boats, trains, planes and more.

California Museum

Campers will explore 10,000 years of history and culture in the week-long camp offering young adventurers engaging learning experiences as they travel back in time to the state’s significant eras.

Crocker Art Museum

Providing a vast education of the arts, Crocker Art Museum is enlightening children on the uses of technology, science, vocabulary, dance and nature in artistic work.

Fairytale Town

Dedicated to expanding the minds of children, the camps at Fairytale Town encompass theatre arts, multicultural crafts, treasure-filled adventures and interactive activities with farm animals among the dozen and a half campings.

Maidu Museum & Historic Site

Sticking to its historical interests, Maidu Museum & Historic Site is offering the chance to explore indigenous lifestyle through the education of archery, petroglyphs, pictographs and wilderness.

Old Sacramento Schoolhouse Museum

The Old Sacramento Schoolhouse Museum offers the same “lessons” for summer school as for the rest the year — groups come for a one-hour lesson where children step back in time to learn what school was like in the 1800s.

Dates: Weekdays 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.; weekends 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Ages: Grades 2nd and up preferred (but 1st graders okay)

Powerhouse Science Center Discovery Campus

For the young scientist in the family, Powerhouse Science Center is giving children the hands-on opportunity to learn crime scene investigations, video game design, zoology, paleontology and galactic science through the six camps offered.

With the support of the Cordova Recreation & Park District and New Star Children’s Theatre, Sacramento Children’s Museum is providing one of the city’s most interactive camps with opportunities for kids to create, write, play or cook.

Verge Center for the Arts

The Verge Kids Summer Studio Camp is giving kids the opportunity to explore their own artistic abilities, learn to engage with career artists, and grow their creative problem solving skills. Participants will be introduced to various means of art-making such as drawing, sculpture, ceramics, and installation art.
