Railroad Museum to Debut Award-Winning Photo Exhibit

center

Without question, locomotives and railroads offer plenty of dramatic, moving and compelling picture-perfect moments. And, in a new exhibit that debuts on Friday, March 11, 2016, California State Parks and the California State Railroad Museum are proud to showcase the impressive award-winning photographs from the prestigious Center for Railroad Photography & Art’s 2015 John E. Gruber Creative Photography Awards Program.

With an international flair and a “Be Creative!” theme this year, nearly 400 images were submitted by 96 talented photographers residing in the U.S., Canada, and seven foreign countries.

The Grand Prize in the Center’s 2015 Creative Photography Awards Program went to Matthew Malkiewicz, of Mount Laurel, New Jersey, with his artistic “Beneath Calm Waters” image of a locomotive and its reflection over water; Christian Zell of Boppard, Germany, received second place for a visually spectacular image of fire being dropped from a steam locomotive; and third place went to Nick King of Handforth, United Kingdom, for his impressionist-styled “Waiting for the Train Home” image. In addition, one of the photographs recognized in the “Judges Also Liked” category – a portrait of a Northern Nevada blacksmith — was taken by Steve Crise of Southern California.

The photographs were judged by a panel of individuals including Center cofounder John Gruber who is also a noted photographer, author, editor and railroad preservationist. The Center, a non-profit arts and education organization founded in 1997, is committed to interpreting the intersection of railroads, art, and culture with American history and life.

This special photography exhibit will remain on display at the California State Railroad Museum through March 2017. In addition, the winners and a selection of the award-winning photographs will be featured in the Spring 2016 issue of the Center’s Railroad Heritage journal and in the March 2016 issue of Railfan & Railroad magazine.

More information about the competition and the Center for Railroad Photography & Art can be found at railphoto-art.org, and more information about the California State Railroad Museum is available at csrmf.org or by calling 916-323-9280.
