New Davis Nanobrewery Serves Up Passion in a Glass

The college town of Davis is occupied by hectic undergrads and busy academics dreaming about relaxation at the end of their day. Right before the sun sets, around happy hour, people rush to form lines at the Beer Shoppe or create a buzz of activity at University of Beer as they consume flights of beer. If the residents of Davis love beer so much, why are there only few places to indulge?

Three Mile Brewing is here to change that. The nanobrewery is the newest addition to the cozy atmosphere of downtown Davis. Opening quietly in February, this nanobrewery is a smaller version of a microbrewery, and, in Three Mile’s case, they only use a 3.5 barrel brewing system. This means that Three Mile has total control over their drink–from the ingredients in the fermentation process to the transfer of the kegs, cold room, tap lines and straight into the glass in the tap room.

The nanobrewing approach makes Three Mile, according to Three Mile co-owner, Joe Runner, a step above any ordinary craft brewery.

“We have 100 percent control of beers from start to finish,” said Runner. “[Our brewing system] is the highest quality of equipment and very robust…It’s steam fired and has temperature control that is very on target and consistent so that we’re able to put out not only quality beers, but also consistent beers every time.”

Nanobrewing also allows Three Mile to showcase the unique seasonal profiles of the beer and to have the flexibility to experiment with flavors.

Three Mile started when seven home brewing enthusiasts decided to stop daydreaming about opening up their own brewery and to take initiative. Truly a passion project, the seven friends–now owners–are keeping their day jobs in addition to managing the brewery, which got its start with the help of Kickstarter.

The Kickstarter project launched November 9, 2015 and it only took a month to raise $16,871. By accepting donations, Three Mile created a community within the brewery before they even opened.

The Davis community is a strong interest for Three Mile. The name derives from the three mile alcohol ban from the university campus that lasted from 1911 to 1979. Now, Three Mile exists to provide craft beer only a few minutes from campus on G street.

Not a beer aficionado? Don’t worry! Three Mile lacks the pretentious atmosphere that floats around stereotypes of craft breweries. They fully understand people might not partake in beer but they also believe that those who dislike it just might not have found the right fit yet.

“Think of it like seafood or wine” said Runner.“There’s so many different kinds it’s hard to lump them all into one category.”

Three Mile is here to help find the perfect beer soulmate for your unique palate, and is a great addition to the ever evolving beer town of Davis. They may have just opened last month, but their seats already quickly fill with satisfied guests enjoying some downtime in downtown.
