Sacramento Republic FC Scoring Drought Ends 2015 Season

A second United Soccer League title in two years – or a repeat of last year’s “Miracle at Bonney” against league rival Los Angeles – wasn’t in the cards for Sacramento Republic FC Saturday night.

The end was ugly. After Sacramento ended on the wrong side of the 1-0 quarterfinals playoff game, several LA Galaxy II players, still obviously stinging from last year’s stunning 3-2 late-game collapse at Bonney Field, scuffled with players on the field, then ran over and taunted Sacramento fans.

It was a frustrating night for Sacramento all around, as the Republic FC outshot LA Galaxy II 15-3 but couldn’t deliver a goal for it’s third straight match.

The match, in front of another announced sellout of 11,442, featured several skirmishes between the two teams, and turned in the 12th minute on Bryan Olivera’s penalty kick. But LA Galaxy goal keeper Clement Diop, who seems much taller than his announced height of 6-foot-1, stymied Sacramento’s assault all night with several spectacular saves.

Sacramento finishes the year at 13-9-7. LA (15-11-3) moves on to the semis on Saturday against the Orange County Blues FC.
