It’s All About Dad This Weekend

Perhaps it’s a delusion, but it seems when Mother’s Day approaches, commercials are flushed with gift ideas for mom, yet when Father’s Day is around the corner, advertisements are few. While we’re hoping it’s not because corporate America values mothers over fathers, the fact remains that when Father’s Day approaches, the lack of helpful commercials makes finding the right gift for dad more difficult. But after everything dads do for their children, they still deserve to feel special and loved this Sunday. If you find yourself needing a little help, here’s some suggestions to get the gift ideas rolling.

Give Dad a [customized] Gift He’ll Love

Not all dads love Home Depot (but if they do, gift cards are great). Make sure the gift you get is one he’ll enjoy or use rather than getting an out-of-this-world gift that may end up unused in the closet.

Does he like to fish, hunt, work out, bicycle, play music, or garden? Enrich his hobby by giving him something that will make doing what he likes more enjoyable. Is he a food guy? Make him his favorite meal, buy him his favorite food, or take him out to his favorite restaurant. If you know what he likes most, that’s a gift he’s sure to love.

Most importantly, don’t forget to include a card to express appreciation for all your dad’s advice, guidance, and everything he has and continues to do for you.

Spend the Day with Dad

While a card is a must no matter what you get dad, a day out with him might just be the unique gift you didn’t think of. Sacramento has a variety of events going on this weekend, so check out these happenings and attend whatever your dad’s thing is.

14th Annual Sacramento French Film Festival
June 19-28, Crest Theatre, K St., Sacramento. For those fathers who enjoy cinema, purchase tickets for an opportunity to see classic French films and new releases, including local short films and premieres new to Sacramento. Champagne, wine and delicious food will be available along with special guests. More info at sacramentofrenchfilmfestival.org.

Wizard World Comic Con Sacramento
June 19-21, Sacramento Convention Center. Enter the world of fantasy and imagination along with the other thousands of fanatics. If dad isn’t particularly keen on sci-fi, not to worry, this event also features wrestling and MMA in addition to anime, games, comics, toys and much more. Alongside the collectibles and art available will be appearances from action and sci-fi stars as well as artists and writers. And if your dad is the adventurous type, try showing up in cosplay. More info at wizardworld.com.

Father’s Day Beer Train or BBQ & Western Show Train
June 20 & 21, Sacramento River Train, West Sacramento. What better way to show your train-loving dad you love him than letting him take a ride down the rails? The Sacramento River Train will host two Father’s Day events this weekend—the Father’s Day Beer Train (June 20) and the Father’s Day BBQ & Western Show Train (June 21). For dads who love craft beer, treat him to a 3-hour train ride that includes live music, eight beer tastings, and a souvenir glass (better yet, upgrade to VIP). For the dads who fancy a gun-slinging day out with the family, enjoy a 3.5-hour train ride and Western Show that ends in a BBQ buffet at Elkhorn Park. Really, you can’t go wrong with either of these events! More info at sacramentorivertrain.com.

Sacramento Taco Festival
June 20, Del Paso Blvd. (between El Camino and Arden). Up the ante of family dinners by attending the festival with the largest selection of tacos and entertainment for all. Make the event more memorable by having dad compete in a taco eating contest. As a bonus, enjoy (or be a part of) the arm wrestling competition, the best sombrero competition, or the Chihuahua beauty contest. More info at sactacofest.com.

2nd Annual Rides in Classics
June 21, California Automobile Museum. If your dad is fanatic of classic automobiles, don’t miss the opportunity for him to ride in one or show off his own classic. The California Automobile Museum celebrates fathers by granting free admission to fathers and providing a Dad’s Day card creation center. More info at calautomuseum.org.

Father’s Day at Funderland
June 21, Funderland. While mom may be the one to think of this one since Funderland is a great place for little ones, Funderland encourages dad to get in some family time on Father’s Day by letting dads ride free all day. More info at funderlandpark.com.

Paper Airplane Day
June 21, Aerospace Museum, McClellan. For the dad who loves airplanes (or making paper versions of them), the Aerospace Museum is hosting a special Father’s Day event. Let dad’s inner child come out by discovering fancy new paper airplane designs or competing in paper airplane competitions. The “Paper Airplane Guru”, Kevin Saunders, will be there to guide and inspire him. Free with museum admission. More info at aerospaceca.org.
