Get Your (free) Museum Fix This Weekend

museum day

It’s time for Sacramento Museum Day again, which means nearly 25 Sacramento-area museums will open their door to the public with free or half-priced admission to all.

The annual event, which takes place 10am-5pm on Saturday, Feb. 7, is a chance for residents to experience the diversity and excitement that Sacramento museums have to offer. From the California State Railroad Museum to Sutter’s Fort, Sacramento’s most loved museums are participating. Also on the list are our unique (and also well-loved) museums such as the Discovery Museum Science and Space Center, the Aerospace Museum, the Sacramento History Museum, and the California Automobile Museum, not to mention those lesser-known museums we may have always been curious about but never ventured into.

Sacramento Zoo and Fairytale Town will offer a family-friendly chance to watch the animals or play amid the fairytales for half-priced admission. The small cost of attending offsets traffic control and security costs for the parks, but still lets you in for a mere $6 adults/$4 kids at Sacramento Zoo and $2.75 at Fairytale Town.

Interestingly, the Crocker Art Museum is not on the list of participating museums this year, but they are offering their own $5 Day at the Crocker event with $5 admission for adults and free admission for youth 17 and under.

Special events will also take place at some locations, including gold-panning at the Sacramento History Musuem, an “open cockpit” at the Aerospace Museum (weather permitting), monster tractors and food trucks at the Heidrick Ag History Center in Woodland, and cake at the Old Sacramento School House Museum to celebrate Laura Ingalls Wilder’s birthday and anniversary of the Sacramento’s first public school in Feb. 1854.

No matter the participating location you visit, Sacramento Museum Day will expose you to the wealth of art, history, culture, science, wildlife, and fun our museums offer.

Due to the popularity of the event, expect to see crowds and plan on attending the few you’d like to see most. It’s better to enjoy what you do see than rush to see them all!
