Raley’s Donates Nearly 3 Million Pounds of Food Through Food For Families Holiday Campaign

Families in need of food this holiday season were generously provided for through Raley’s annual Food For Families holiday bag campaign, which raised an amazing 2.9 million pounds of food in Northern California and Northern Nevada.

The campaign, which ran from November 7-December 31, surpassed its goal by nearly 50%, making it among the most successful campaigns in recent years and setting a new bar for 2015, the supermarket said.

“This year was one of our best holiday bag campaigns ever,” Jennifer Teel-Wolter, Food For Families Executive Director, said in a release. “Not only did we raise nearly 3 million pounds of food for those in need, we also did it by providing fresh and healthy options to our food banks.”

Food For Families launched a new initiative in June that increased access to fresh fruits and vegetables for program participants. Food For Families stayed true to their commitment this November when they announced holiday bags would include a larger and wider variety of fresh and nutritious items such as fresh carrots, bananas, and, for the first time, milk, whole-wheat pasta and tuna.

“Our goal is really to make sure…that in our area where we’re surrounded by all this agriculture abundance that every family has access to fresh, healthy food and that we’re doing our job to make that a reality,” Teel-Wolter said when the initiative launched.

The raising of nearly 3 million pounds of food was made possible by holiday donations made via Facebook, mobile texting, and in Raley’s stores. For $10, customers were able to give $27 worth of food since the supermarket more than doubled each donation. Each holiday bag provided 21 meals to a family in need.

Holiday bags were distributed by 73 Food For Families food bank partners throughout the region. Donations given in a particular community are distributed within the same community so that program lets neighbors help neighbors.

In addition to the 2.9 million pounds of food, Raley’s donated over 100,000 pounds of fresh turkeys, chickens and hams, which provide over 80,000 meals.
