TBD Fest: An Up-and-Coming Festival

Empire of the Sun @ TBD Fest 10.4.14

21,000 attendees stormed TBD’s dusty festival grounds despite the scorching hot weather Sacramento received over the 3-day festival, so you could definitely say TBD was a success! The weekend showcased some stellar headliners with Moby, Empire of the Sun and Justice, who put on some of the most epic sets I’ve seen in Sacramento. I was already blown away by this year’s line-up and the acts definitely did not disappoint. However, the smaller acts were all surprisingly good as well.

I definitely picked up new groups to follow going into the next music festival season. Carousel, Teen Daze and Explosions in the Sky, were among my favorite new groups. Carousel is an electric-pop duo from San Francisco whom I stumbled upon while visiting the Lowbrau tent and decided to stay for the rest of their set. I really enjoyed their cover of Deadmau5’s “Veldt” and plan to listen to more of their music from here on out! This is one of the reasons why I love attending music festivals, there’s always new talent to seek out and experience.

It’s still hard to believe all of this amazingness took place right here in our home town! Co-Owners of Lowbrau, Mike Hargis and Clay Nutting, as well as the entire TBD staff, should be proud of their efforts for their first time event. MUCH more improved from their previous LAUNCH Music Festival. Even the stages were so much more improved, it felt like going to multiple fully produced concerts at the festival rather than seeing a bunch of different acts take on the same basic stage. Empire of the Sun’s finale is still ingrained in the back of my head with mind-blowing effects and colorful costumes; it felt as if I was watching a Broadway production in concert form. Two lucky fans got to dance on stage alongside Empire of the Sun’s lead singer, Luke Steele, making the performance really something special for Sacramento.

What was most impressive about the festival to me, was the amount of time event organizers, local artists and designers put into making the TBD festival grounds extraordinary and making festival goers feel not only immersed music, but art, design and community as well. Throughout the festival grounds local artwork was showcased giving attendees the perfect social media photo ops. The crowd favorite was definitely posing with the reflective cube that also lit up at night time and the 65-foot-tall ferris wheel.

However, there are a few things TBD Fest can look to improve on for next year’s festival despite their successful first event. First off, the festival grounds were completely dusty and in combination with the heat of Sacramento, left many festival goers melting in the sun with few lounging and shaded areas to hang out at. Going to Coachella Music Festival in the dessert is always a blast, but dirt getting kicked up left and right and sneezing out dirty boogers at the end of the night was one of the least pleasant things about the weekend (although well worth it).  TBD festival also neglected to have water refill stations that many other festivals provide for attendees to stay hydrated throughout the day which frustrated attendees during the weekend’s heatwave. Despite some of these discomforts, attendees of all ages still enjoyed a stellar line-up ranging from artists on the rise to well respected names in the industry.

The best part about TBD Fest was seeing not only a bunch of 90s kids, but also seeing families and all age ranges attending the festival and dancing in the crowd. Not only did TBD Fest celebrate music but it also celebrated Sacramento. It was nice to see this festival come together and see the city get excited about music and full production events. Michael Hargis and Clay Nutting did a job well done and I’m looking forward to attending next year’s festival! #WeAreTBD
