The California State Fair | A Photo Gallery

This is the 160th anniversary of the California State Fair. According to an article by Mike Blount in a program about the fair, in 1854, California’s number one industry was agriculture. It’s still true today and it was a large part of the first State Fair.

“The State Fair is all about celebrating the past and showcasing the future,” explains Rick Pickering, CEO of Cal Expo and the State Fair, in Blount’s article.

The fair also showcases technology and is the best place to showcase California. 90% of the wine people drink comes from here. Blount explains that “the Sacramento region considers itself to be the Farm-to-Fork Capital and there is a lot of research in agriculture being done right here.”

And I thought it was all about the rides and special fair food.
