Eight years ago I had the opportunity to experience a Tea & Tour program at our Sacramento Zoo. The docent leading the tour was so knowledgeable and engaging! I came away wanting to experience that excitement again and share it with others. I signed up for the next docent training class and now, 7 years later, I am the president of the docent council!
Being so involved with zoo staff and docents has truly opened my eyes to how involved and dedicated their work is. Education and conservation is always their number one message. Their total commitment to the care and well-being of our animal collection is superior; other animal facilities even contact our zoo staff for suggestions and advice.
One of the many things I’ve observed is the high cost of caring for our collection. Our standards are never lowered even though the costs of food and maintenance rises. As a community, what can we do to help offset these costs? Consider donating to the Sacramento Zoo on May 6, BIG Day of Giving. During this 24-hour online giving challenge, your donation will receive a boost from a pool of matching funds. This money will turn into bananas, giraffe chow and anteater slurpies! Then, bring yourself, your family and friends to see how appreciative the animals are of your gifts. You will leave with a smile on your face and joy in your heart!
