Winning isn’t everything.
It is a saying that Hollywood sports movies have become enamored with. But, for a minor league soccer team with dreams of major league grandeur, winning has to be everything.
So far, so good. The Sacramento Republic F.C. has run the table as far as winning off the field is concerned.
It all started on the field of Sacramento’s other minor league team, the Rivercats, with the unveiling of the perfect name, logo and colors.
A name that captures the essence of the capitol city and colors that came straight from the California flag.
The franchise kept on riding the winning streak straight into open tryouts and a plan for a soccer specific stadium at Cal Expo.
The hat trick came Thursday, when Republic President Warren Smith announced that the team is joining forces with current MLS franchises San Jose Earthquakes and Portland Timbers. In other words, the Republic will act as a AAA baseball team for a Major League franchise.
“This is the best of both worlds,” Smith said in a news conference.
One would have to agree with that idea, as a partnership with the Timbers, who were in the Republic’s shoes for 10 years, will be beneficial in that the Republic will know exactly what they need to do to make it to the MLS.
The partnership with the Earthquakes could signify an eventual regional rivalry, as well as provide talent for both the Republic and San Jose.
While the winning has been prevalent with the new franchise, it must continue if this team wants a shot at the MLS.
There is one final piece that’s missing: a player from right here in Sacramento. Give the fans a player to root for, and who better than a hometown hero?
This in turn will sell more tickets, which will get the MLS to notice that Sacramento belongs in the top division. Which, at the end of the day, is what we all want.
There are two players from Sacramento who are participating in today’s final tryouts. Men by the name of Adedoja Akinsanya and Tyler Scott. Perhaps one of those two are that player.
There is no reason to think that the Republic won’t do it, they have already laid out a great track record.
So Mr. Smith, go ahead and just keep winning.
