Shake, rattle and roll on over to the Sac State Rock Auction

The Sac State Geology club is hosting its 10th annual Rock Auction fundraiser this November, and there are hundreds of items of for grabs!

The family friendly event includes live and silent auctions, catered food and beverages, and children’s activities. Auction specimens vary in size from small gems to large garden rocks and include crystals, geodes, fossils, and highly polished rocks and stones. “This year we have some incredible museum-quality pieces on the auction block,” says Club officer Emily Kentta.

Since its inception in 2004, the Rock Auction has raised thousands of dollars to support the study of geology by subsidizing field costs for Sac State Geology Students. The club also proudly funds ‘rock boxes’ that provide rock and mineral samples for young scientists at underfunded public schools.

“We get quite a few amateur geologists at the auction,” says club officer Chris Day, “Many of our guests are looking for a unique holiday gift, and many more still want to support the next generation of geologists.”

Volunteers have been hard at work collecting specimens from local businesses, alumni, faculty and collectors. “It is a huge undertaking but it is all worth it,” said Kentta, “because we are able to share our love of geology with the entire region! We wouldn’t be able to do that without our volunteers and donors.”
