Midtown Arts Festival celebrates creative collaboration

Art disciplines will collide in an explosion of collaborative ingenuity called “Creative Connections” at the Midtown Arts Festival tomorrow, October 19, from 12:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.

“An aspect of Sacramento’s creative community that is very unique is how often artists, arts organizations and local businesses work together to foster and support a thriving arts community,” said Midtown Business Association Marketing and Events Manager Tashina Brito.

The community’s passion for art in all its forms will be alive at the festival, which will include dance performances, art demonstrations and fashion shows. With the vast amount of art galleries and performing arts studios in Sacramento, the event will be overflowing with artistic expression.

While many artists get their start with individual journeys that embody them as an artist, a lot of really unique and remarkable art can stem from collaboration, even – and perhaps especially – if those collaborators are from separate artistic disciplines. A prime example of this is Ruhstaller’s “Tap into the Arts” project. The local brewery showcased Sacramento artists on the labels of three new beers they released this year, uniting the intricate art of brewing beer with the more traditional types of visual art from local artists. The collaborative project supported Verge Center for the Arts, a local non-profit focusing on contemporary art in Sacramento. Ruhstaller will be served in the beer garden at the festival, along with Rubicon, Hobby Brewing Co., Crispin Ciders, and Blue Moon.

As the festival kicks off, many kinds of art from all across the spectrum will be represented, including both contemporary dance and ballet performances, T-shirt screen printing and fashion shows featuring local designers, and a surplus of hand-made jewelry to check out while you sip local beer and watch live, collaborative art demonstrations.

“Creative Connections highlights a core value found throughout our community: collaboration,” said Brito. “Many Midtown businesses, whether retail, restaurant, etc. have and will continue to create collaborative partnerships with other businesses, nonprofits, schools, galleries (and) artists to create unique pieces of work.”

The Midtown Arts Festival is a family-friendly event, with face painting and interactive arts and crafts booths for children. Many different types of art from plenty of local artists will be available for purchase, including jewelry, clothing and more traditional art pieces. Experience the festival in front of the M.A.R.R.S. Building on 20th and J Streets and support Sacramento art and culture.
