Sacramento celebrates National Cheeseburger Day with a good old-fashioned cook-off.
Sacramento’s top restaurants gathered in the infield of Raley Field for a burger competition to benefit the Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation of America.

The 2013 Burger Battle included Broderick Roadhouse, de Vere’s Irish Pub, Ettore’s European Bakery and Restaurant, Papa Dale’s Drivin’ Diner, The Eatery, Formoli’s, Restaurant Thir13en and more, all competing to knock 2012’s Best Burger champion, The Chef’s Table, off the throne.

The 2013 People’s Choice award went to Broderick Roadhouse,
a West Sacramento brick-and-mortar extension of the Wicked ‘Wich food truck, for their “Johnny Cash” burger."

According to the menu, the “Johnny Cash” consists of a smoked pepper-crusted beef patty, bacon, pickled peppers, cheddar cheese, fried onions and a house barbecue sauce.
Judge’s favorite Ettore’s European Bakery and Restaurant featured a jalapeño-scallion-cheddar bun, plus with mushrooms and local produce.
My personal favorite was the biscuit burger from Bacon & Butter, a perfectly seasoned patty served on a biscuit with leaf lettuce and tomato.
Promoters couldn’t have picked a better day than National Cheeseburger Day to help shed light on diseases that may affect way more people than estimated: Crohn’s disease and colitis. Proceeds from the event will go to the Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation of America. According to their website, donations will help fund critical research for improving treatment and finding cures for all inflammatory bowel diseases. It will also help sustain support programs for those who are struggling with the physical and emotional toll of living with Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis.
Crohn’s disease and colitis collectively affect nearly 1.4 million people in the United States, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. It’s events like the Sacramento Burger Battle that help highlight the need for more research and advocacy, while giving people a chance to have a great time.
