The Sac City Rollers is Sacramento’s premiere flat track roller derby league, founded in 2006 – and our success rate this season proves that we have what it takes to be national stars!
The Sac City Rollers began the year unranked in the worldwide standings of the Women’s Flat Track Derby Association, but they climbed the ladder to sit at No. 45 in time for playoffs, due to a combination of skillful play and tireless on- and off-the-track training. And in August, the Capitol Punishers, that fantastic, all-star travel team, placed second at the WFTDA Division II Tournament in Kalamazoo, Mich. This means the Punishers have punched their ticket to go to the WFTDA Championships in early November! These tournaments stream live worldwide on wftda.com, so you can catch the action from the comfort of your own couch.
And that’s not all: The second travel team, the Folsom Prison Bruisers, composed of up-and-coming players, just swept the competition at the 2nd Annual Deep Blue Tournament in South Lake Tahoe. Rounding out the league is SCR’s junior team, known as the Bad Apples. They just hosted their own second annual tournament, Green Green Vacation 2, at the beginning of the summer.

Practices can run as many as four days a week for up to three hours at a time, so there is just as much focus on cross-training and dietary considerations as there is on perfecting how to block and jam. For the players this helps breed toughness and sharpens their advantage, and is always encouraged at all levels of league training. Anyone wanting to try roller derby should come and check it out, either by coming to a tryout or starting at the rec league level – it’s a great workout and lots of F.U.N.
The Sac City Rollers stage at least one event every month, whether it be a bout (competitive game) or a community outreach or fundraising endeavor. Check out the events calendar at saccityrollers.com for the next good time. The next home bout is happening Sept. 14 at The Rink on Bradshaw, featuring the Folsom Prison Bruisers and the Bad Apples taking on the Port City Roller Girls and the V-Town Derby Delinquents in what will prove to be a hot matchup.
See you there!
