An amazing evening showcasing some of Sacramento’s finest designers, makeup and hair styling salons, was this year’s Hair & Fashion Battle, Salons vs. Designer.
The gala event was held at the Sacramento Scottish Rite Masonic Center on Saturday, Aug. 24.
Hours before the event the backstage area was busy with models getting hair and makeup done. Last-minute alterations and fittings also ensued. Models received final instructions and used the time to chat or practice their walk.
Salons and designers participating in the battle included Beauty Intoxication Salon, Intrigue Waves by Anastasia, Parker’s Place Salon, Taliand Designs, Two Hot Hair Spot Salon, Salons Within, Electrik by Eshonna Trice, Another Look Salon, Jacks Hair Shop Hair by Darlene and 2WEE designs.
Months of preparation brought an aura of relief to contestants as they left the stage after showcasing their designs and styles, only to return to the stage in angst, as judges critiqued their work and decided who would win the grand prize of $2,000 up for grabs in the salon category, and $1,000 for designers.
A couple dozen vendors and community information tables occupied stations lined up in the back of the main hall, facing the stage.
The competition serves as a fundraiser for scholarship opportunities for the Roberts Family Development Center. The center provides services to families with children facing challenges in school, and who try to improve their circumstances.
The stage featured a VIP area, where VIPs were treated to drinks, appetizers and desserts. VIP guests were able to talk to and take photos with host Richard Hallmarq.
Hallmarq, a contestant of “Project Runway,” Season 11, did a wonderful job as host. His positive attitude and personality helped the show move along. Hallmarq also participated by showing his own designs.
BIA Salon, which won last year’s salon battle, showcased wonderfully wild hair and makeup, which made for a great opening to the 2013 Hair Battle.
As the show moved to the competition, judges took notes as they watched each of the contestants showcase their styles and designs. Judges also critiqued each of the competitors after they walked the stage.
The judging panel included Carnette Burnett and Maurice Burnett, owners of BIA Salon. Sarah Marie Hawkins, Raw Sacramento curator; Elisia Gonzales of Fox40 News; Nancy Grace McMillan, of Inspiration 4 Life; photographer Quinn Ung; and Ginger Wong, owner of Transformations Makeup Institute, also decided who would win the top prizes of the competition.
Judging was not an easy task, but somehow the judges selected winners in several categories.
The two top awards went to Jacks Hair Shop by Darlene, which took home a $2,000 prize for winning the salon competition. Shop owner Darlene Ragan commented, “This will help us with the rebuilding of our home, maybe we’ll buy some furniture.” Their home suffered major fire damage, and as they try to recover from the tragedy, the funds will certainly help in their rebuilding efforts.
The top designer’s award for this year’s battle went to Electrik by Eshonna Trice, which secured a $1,000 prize.
Once again, Marlett Berry’s A Berry Special Event, in my opinion, brought a delightful and exciting program to the 2013 Hair & Fashion Battle, Salons vs. Designer competition. The competition also brought together many fashion industry leaders to showcase some of the best designers, salons, makeup artists, models, vendors and photographers in the Sacramento area.
