Weekend full of fun is scheduled at the Sacramento Banana Festival

Banana Festival 2012

Banana Festival 2012

The fourth annual Sacramento Banana Festival will hold this year’s festivities at William Land Park on Aug. 10-11.

The festival is a multicultural event celebrating different cultures. African, Asian and various countries in the Americas use the banana as a source of food, art and culture. The food and culture of these cultures are celebrated within the many activities scheduled for the weekend.

Part of the proceeds from the Sacramento Banana Festival will benefit the Sojourner Truth Museum. The museum will be making a move this year to a new space provided by the Sacramento City Unified School District, and funds raised will help with this project.

Three stages will showcase multicultural foods, activities and entertainment. The main stage will feature African drum and dance ceremonies, a fashion show, jazz music, dancing and many other activities. A teen zone and a children’s area will also have stages and activities set up for younger visitors.

Every year numerous vendors and community representatives have tables set up throughout the festival, where educational and other kinds of information are available for guests. Healthy alternative activities are also scheduled, including a 5K run and a Banana Spirit Health Pavilion. The pavilion focuses on a variety of health-related experiences and educational opportunities when using and learning the benefits of the banana.

Carnival-type rides and activities will include bungee jumping, raffles with prizes, carnival rides, inflatable bouncers, hands-on activities and much more.
