Luxe for Life

Every child deserves a good home and loving family. But some children are not so fortunate. Some children suffer abuse and neglect on a daily basis. Some get shuffled from one foster home to the next. Some just get lost in the system.

The Sacramento Children’s Home provides a safe haven for the most vulnerable kids in the area. The crisis nursery provides a safe environment that is emergency day care and overnight care intended to prevent child abuse and neglect.

“Any family can utilize services from the crisis nursery and family resource center,” said Sarah Mullins, SCH marketing and development director. “We have a no-wrong-door policy, we never turn away a family in need regardless of income. Any family can access those services any time.”

Their residential treatment program works exclusively with foster children and the wraparound program looks for permanent placements and permanent families for those children.

“The residential treatment program is an intensive support program for kids that are part of the foster care system that have been through extreme amounts of trauma,” Mullins said. “Usually child abuse, neglect and trauma and really suffer from extreme emotional and developmental issues.”

While they provide resources for at-risk kids, they also provide resources for families in hopes of keeping them together.

Lexi was able to strengthen her family because of the services she received. Lexi, a client of the home’s transition age program, was 18 years old and had an infant son with no family to help her. As a survivor of childhood abuse, she suffered from anxiety and depression. She and her son began seeing a therapist in SCH’s youth counseling center and participated in parent-child interaction therapy. After almost two years of therapy Lexi is attending California State University, Sacramento, and has a strong, thriving relationship with her son.

The Sacramento Children’s Home helps over 5,000 kids annually, from birth to age 22. You can help them continue to provide for children by attending Luxe for Life, one of their largest fundraisers.

“Luxe was developed five years ago by a group of dedicated volunteers who wanted to put on a really fun, really fancy, high-end type of event for Sacramento and came up with Luxe for Life,” Mullins said.

Luxe for Life will be held at the Elks Tower Ballroom on Aug. 17, starting at 7:30 p.m. The event will showcase local restaurants, cocktails, live and silent auctions and a live band, complete with dancing. This year’s honorary host is artist David Garibaldi.

Proceeds will support programs such as the crisis nursery, which provides diapers, formula, clothes and anything a toddler or infant would need.
