Can it really be three decades since DJs across the country first dropped the needle on "Sports," the Huey Lewis & The News album that went to No. 1 and spawned four Top 10 hits in the process?
As incredible as it may seem to those who recall 1983 like it was just yesterday, the answer is, "Yes." But thanks to some great genes and dynamite DNA, Lewis and his fellow Northern California-bred "Newsmen" are giving their fans a thrill ride in the Way Back Machine.
During their July 13 stop at Lincoln’s Thunder Valley Casino Resort Amphitheatre – part of their 30th anniversary "Sports" tour – Lewis and the boys seemed to have made identical deals with the devil; looking good and sounding even better. They proved their rock-and-roll hearts are definitely still beating.
In his early comments to a nostalgia-hungry capacity crowd, Lewis further fueled their memories by talking about the days when listening to an entire album required the physical act of lifting a vinyl disc from a turntable’s spindle before flipping it over to enjoy the "B" side.
But whether it was running through the entire "Sports" playlist, or chatting up the all-ages audience, Lewis was the recipient of nonstop cheers – making it clear that Thunder Valley ticket holders were on his side.
