Book Talk: Local history book stirs memories and recipes

On Wednesday, July 17, Maryellen Burns and Keith Burns will discuss their book, “Lost Restaurants of Sacramento and Their Recipes,” at Time Tested Books, beginning at 7 p.m. This latest release by the History Press will certainly bring back memories for many who grew up in Sacramento, and for those who arrived more recently. Look for this pair to have some items prepared from the recipes on hand. Arrive early for a seat.

What was your favorite restaurant that has since closed? A quick search of social media spots reveals that people miss Sam’s on J Street. I remember this wonderful shredded barbecue chicken sandwich that Woolworth’s sold at the counter in the late 1980s. Jim-Denny’s is not closed, but it is a stopping place for out-of-state visitors.

Sacramento restaurants have come and gone, some have changed their menu to keep up with our changing food interests, and no matter how large or small, how upscale or downscale they are, they have a special place in our hearts. This book explores that place.
