Nicolas’Garden brings farm-to-fork message to Washington

Local farm-to-fork darling Nicolas Come is taking his healthy eating mission to Washington D.C., where he will be spreading Sacramento’s message as the “Farm-to-Fork Kids Correspondent” at first lady Michelle Obama’s Kids State Dinner to be held at the White House at noon on Tuesday, July 9.

Come will be calling in live reports to KFBK’s afternoon news program, hosted by Kitty O’Neal.

Eight-year-old Come created Nicolas’Garden, a healthy eating app and recipe database, with the help of his father, Stephane Come, and fellow teammates at Hacker Lab’s Cereal Hack II in November of 2012. The app launched in May of this year at Soil Born Farms’ “A Day on the Farm.”

In preparation for the launch, Nicolas Come received a tour of the Hock Farm kitchen from Chef Kurt Spataro. Spataro mentored Come on the importance of food education and answered his questions on presentation and public outreach. When Come expressed a desire to bring his, and Sacramento’s, message to the first lady, it was Spataro’s wife, Kitty O’Neal, who procured a media pass for Come on behalf of KFBK for Tuesday’s luncheon.

This week Come will tour the White House kitchen and garden, interview the youth finalists in the first lady’s Healthy Lunchtime Challenge recipe contest, and hopes for the chance to speak with Michelle Obama.

“Right now I’m just looking up the first lady, so I know how to interview her,” Come said Sunday morning before departing for the east coast. “I want to ask her all sorts of things – how she got the idea to start the contest, what she, Sasha and Malia like to eat and cook, and if she even has time to cook.”

Come is also hoping to recruit recipes for his app.

“I’m going to try to talk to everyone. We want to encourage all the kids, even the ones who weren’t finalists, to put the recipes they submitted onto my app.”

Come will also meet with Congresswoman Doris Matsui on July 8, after he arrives in Washington, D.C.

Father Stephane Come will be updating Nicolas’Garden’s social media while Nicolas conducts his interviews. To follow along check out NicolasGarden on Twitter or Facebook
