LIVE: Calling all Dreamers

Voting ends July 3 for the Downtown Sacramento Foundation’s “Calling All Dreamers” retail business competition – which will see a new business set up shop in the central city. Out of fifty applicants, five remain. Sac Press will be live with three of those finalists today.

The winner will receive a prize package worth about $125,000, which includes free rent up to a year in a downtown location, startup capital, and business support services.

“We want to encourage innovative business owners to launch, operate, and thrive in Downtown,” said Downtown Sacramento Partnership (DSP) Business Recruitment and Retention Manager, Valerie Mamone-Werder. “By incentivizing one business we will be creating more jobs, a new passionate business owner, and one more reason for visitors and residents to experience Downtown.”

Mamone-Werder will be joining us today at noon for a live chat, along with finalists:

CEO Benjamin Schwartz of Benjamins Shoes Corporation – Schwartz has been studying the art of shoemaking and making shoes by hand for the last few years. His company partners with a family-owned and operated factory with over 30 years of industry experience. Schwartz hopes to someday expand past footwear to produce other apparel.

Sandra Lemos of Dailey Method Studios – Lemos and her partner Sacy Armijo operate two Dailey Method Studios, which teaches ballet barre-based exercises focused on core conditioning and and proper alignment, in Roseville and Folsom. Lemos and Armijo hope to expand their market in Sacramento to meet the growing needs of their customers.

Darcy Trotten/R.T. Gibbs of 6C Rock Candy – This female-owned business is part boutique, part free community recording studio that provides further support producing and styling videos for a fee. Gibbs has five years of experience in independent music media and Trotten is a fashion show producer with experience in brand management, art and design.
