Fraternal Orders, Secret Societies and Symbolism Tour at Historic City Cemetery

If underground societies give you the heebie jeebies, fear not – the sun will be high in the sky as the Fraternal Orders, Secret Societies and Symbolism Tour at the Historic City Cemetery weaves its way through the years of Sacramento’s heaviest immigration.

Sacramento played a key role as a hub for immigrants during the Gold Rush years, and the cemetery provides a historical retelling of that period.

During the guided tour, visitors will be shown various tombstones and grave sites from individuals who were part of fraternal orders and secret societies, including Woodmen of the World – some of which have tombstones shaped like logs or trees – the Knights of Pythias, and the Freemasons.

The tour will begin with a sort of “Cemetery 101,” which will provide guests with background information about the historic resting grounds. It will then make its way through the gravesites, stopping at certain spots to give participants a glimpse into the past through stories about individuals who are buried at that spot.

The tour is free to attend, and will take place on Saturday, July 6, from 10:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. The Sacramento Historic City Cemetery is located at 1000 Broadway.
