Sacramento celebrates Prop 8 and DOMA victory!

Today opinions were issued by the US Supreme Court in the Hollingsworth v. Perry (Proposition 8) as well as United States v. Windsor (DOMA) cases. DOMA was struck down outright and the Court found that “Yes on 8” did not have standing, which means the Ninth Circuit ruling that Prop 8 is indeed unconstitutional will stand.

Here in Sacramento same-sex couples have been waiting for the day they can line up at the Sacramento County Clerk’s Office to apply for their marriage license and for once, not be turned away as they have been each year on Valentine’s Day.

Today, thousands same sex-couples throughout California are making plans to marry as soon as possible.

In a statement by Governor Jerry Brown today he said, “After years of struggle, the U.S. Supreme Court today has made same-sex marriage a reality in California. In light of the decision, I have directed the California Department of Public Health to advise the state’s counties that they must begin issuing marriage licenses to same-sex couples in California as soon as the Ninth Circuit confirms the stay is lifted,” said Governor Brown.

Local Sacramento activists have prepared for this day over the last few months. This evening there will be many speeches and a street party to celebrate today’s decision.
