alt-J plays Ace of Spades

Ace of Spades will be hosting recently acclaimed alt-J this Sunday for a packed show. Recipient of the 2012 Mercury Prize – Great Britain’s selective award, appointed by music journalists and industry reps, and usually given to the quirky underdog- the quartet has roused further attention from everything like indie blog collective Hype Machine to National Public Radio’s insightful Tiny Desk Concert.

Alt-J formed in 2008. Named for the triangle that appears when pressing "Alt" and "J" on a Mac, the British-based band first released singles, “Matilda” and “Fitzpleasure,” in early 2012; a full-length studio debuted later in the same year. An Awesome Wave is reflective of the group’s noted quirky beats, incorporated into folk-inflected dub-pop. Comparisons range widely, but touch on Hot Chip, James Blake and Wild Beasts.

Following the release of their album, alt-J has commenced a world-wide tour, headed east across the country, crossing over to Europe and returning in early Fall.

Not able to see them in Sac? Fox Theater has been sold out for days, but you can catch them at this year’s Coachella and Sasquatch festivals, or try Portland’s McMenamin’s Crystal Ballroom venue on September 3rd. Bring back some beer while you’re at it.
