STD Awareness Month – get tested, Sacramento

April is a little known, but important month of observance – National STD (sexually transmitted disease) Awareness Month. The Center for Disease Control is promiting this month of awareness, and has plenty of information on signs and symptoms, places to get screened and more.

Every year in the U.S. an estimated 20 million people will contract an STD according to statistics most of them teens under the age of 25. California has some of the highest rates of infection in the country and Sacramento has some of the highest in California with 2,778 reported cases of gonorrhea and chlamydia just in teens between the ages of 15 and 19 in 2009.

"Stigma, inconsistent or incorrect condom use, limited access to health care, and a combination of other factors contribute to high rates of STDs among teens and young adults," according to the CDC. "Despite this concerning news, it is important to know that most STDs are treatable, and many are curable."

Many STDs don’t exhibit symptoms and some are so mild that they go unnoticed or misdiagnosed, such as chlamydia and gonorrhea. That’s why the CDC suggests any sexually active people get screened yearly.

Some of these infections can cause serious health problems if left untreated such as infertility, nerve damage and even cancer.

The month of April is a great time to get tested, especially if you never have. Here is a great listing of clinics in the area.
