It’s Valentine’s Day, nerds. I know this day is like every other day for most of our unfortunate lot: single with not a light on the horizon for love.
Yes, being a nerd has gained some acceptance with the mainstream population. The Marvel movies are immensely popular right now, with "The Avengers" having been directed by none other than one of the biggest nerds of all time, Joss Whedon. "The Walking Dead" is the most-watched cable show on TV. Even non-nerds seem to be anticipating the J.J. Abrams’s "Star Trek Into Darkness" (does anyone else find that title to be as clunky as I do?).
I even occasionally see those "I Love Nerds" shirts that people wear.
The question that begs to be asked, though? Does the wearer of that shirt really know what they are getting themselves into?
How long will it be before they get sick of hearing you and your circle of friends bash George Lucas and the Prequels every time you get together? Are they ready for the knowledge that you read the "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" and the "Dark Tower" comics because you don’t want Buffy’s vampire drama and Roland’s quest to ever end (go pick them up at Big Brother Comics at 1722 J St., Sacramento CA, 95811)? Can they be there for you when you come home from a long day of L.A.R.P. (http://www.meetup.com/Amtgard-Sacramento/) without a look of disappointment on their face? Will they be there by your side when you have to go to the ER because you have a blood clot in your leg after playing Mass Effect 3 for five hours straight while sitting?
If the answers to these questions have routinely been no, then you may want to go to www.trekpassions.com, which is part of the Passions Network, a free dating website.
Trek Passions is for the nerd’s nerd and the non-nerd who is dreaming of his or her pasty lover. On the website, there are many different men and women in the Sacramento area to choose who share your interest in all things nerdy. You can even set up your account to search across different nerd dating websites hosted by Passions Network, too.
If you’re interested, my profile is under Ewoklove. The attached photo will let you know why.
There’s also Geek 2 Geek (www.gk2gk.com). It appears to have a larger selection to choose from, but with a wider group of interests, which range from death metal lovers to Disneyland enthusiasts.
Geeksdating.com is another website a nerd might want to take a look at, but I couldn’t peruse the members without creating an account.
Set those game controllers down, put on some Brut or Cosmic Radiance by Britney Spears (I’m imagining it’s been a while since you bought any cologne or perfume) and get ready to meet the nerd-love of your life.
And if you’re still feeling a little hesitant, to paraphrase Young MC’s wise words, don’t stand on the wall like you was Poindexter.
