Irish rockers Saw Doctors coming to town

Why not extend the St. Patrick’s Day celebration to the whole month by getting down to the Saw Doctors concert at the end of March? These Irish rockers will perform for the first time in Sacramento on March 29 at Ace of Spades during their 25-city North American tour.

The Saw Doctors single “I Useta Lover”, was number one on the Irish charts in 1990 for nine weeks and holds the record as Ireland’s best selling single. The Saw Doctors have had 18 top 30 hits and three No. 1 songs in their homeland since their 1986 beginning.

Recently, the band had another hit on their hands when they re-recorded Petula Clark’s 1960s song “Downtown” with Clark herself. Leo Moran, group vocalist and guitarist, said Clark was “lovely, exactly as you would expect. A true lady.”

Moran said the band is known for “playing snippets at the end of gigs,” and when they first sampled “Downtown”, the crowd loved it. Based on the response, the band’s producer connected with Clark’s producer and before long they were filming a video version of the song together with scenes from Paris and Galway.

“The Further Adventures of the Saw Doctors”, the band’s seventh studio album, was released in the United States on March 13 and will be featured at their upcoming concert. Moran said their latest album is different for them and “pushes boundaries” with its darker lyrics.

Although band membership has changed over the years, the band continues its energetic style with founders Davy Carton and Leo Moran, both vocalists and guitarists, and Anthony Thistlewaite on bass, Kevin Duffy on keyboards and newest member Rickie O’Neill on drums.

When asked how he keeps it fresh after more than 25 years of songwriting, recording and touring, Moran simply stated from his heart, “It’s music. It’s enjoyable. It’s a beautifully privileged way to make a living.”

The Saw Doctors will perform on March 29 with special guest Nickel Slots at Ace of Spades. Ace of Spades is an all-ages venue located at 1417 R St. Tickets are available at Dimple Records, The Beat and Armadillo Music in Davis, or online at Ace of Spades. Doors open at 7 p.m.
