Railroad Museum Debuts New Photo Exhibit “Steam: An Enduring Legacy” on March 9

Special presentation and book Signing spportunity with railroad photographer Joel Jensen on Sunday, 3/11 at 11 a.m. & 2 p.m.!

The California State Railroad Museum, in collaboration with the Center for Railroad Photography & Art, will debut a visually-enticing new photo exhibit titled Steam: An Enduring Legacy, the Railroad Photographs of Joel Jensen on Friday, March 9, 2012.  To help kick-off this exciting exhibit, Joel Jensen will deliver two special presentations in the Railroad Museum Theater on Sunday, March 11, at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m., each to be followed by book signing opportunities.

Showcasing 50 dramatic black-and-white images, the exhibit features a selection of railroad photographs taken and published in a new book of the same name by the famed railroad photographer.  Visitors to the Railroad Museum will see how Joel Jensen has artfully succeeded in visually capturing the bygone era of steam railroading and, in fact, has documented virtually every major steam operation west of the Mississippi.   Although regularly scheduled steam locomotives for American trains were virtually gone by 1960, Jensen’s dramatic photographs of steam locomotives beautifully capture the spirit of American railroading throughout the West. The images featured in the new photo exhibit showcase the immense mechanical power available at the time but also demonstrate the human component needed to keep the trains operating in the late 19th century and early 20th century.

While there is no cost to attend the special presentations, regular Museum admission fees apply.  The photographic book Steam: An Enduring Legacy, the Railroad Photographs of Joel Jensen (W.W. Norton & Company) is also available for purchase in the Museum Store.

The exhibit Steam: An Enduring Legacy will remain on display through July 29, 2012.
