Sacramento Beer Week officially starts today, but those who wanted an earlier start gathered last night at the Sacramento Grand Ballroom for “The Art of Beer: A Celebration of California Craft Beer and Fine Art.”

Sponsored by the Northern California Brewers Guild, Bokeh Box Media, Eben Weisberg and the California Craft Brewers Association, the event drew several hundred people together to check out art exhibits and taste craft brews and food. Over 20 breweries and 10 restaurants served their beer, ale and food to an energetic crowd of beer enthusiasts.

Proceeds from the Art of Beer event will help support the UC Davis MIND Institute, an international research center dedicated to studying and treating autism and other neurodevelopmental disorders.

Dan Scott from the Northern California Brewers Guild said the market for craft brewing is growing in spite of the struggling economy. He said, "In Sacramento we had three brewing companies open in the city limits in the last twelve months. In the Sacramento area we have seven or eight breweries that have opened in the last twelve months, or are opening this month."

Scott said the craft beer industry is a great partner for fund-raising. He said, "The craft beer industry is enormously successful in raising money for local charities up and down California. It just goes to show not only the generosity of the industry but the success of the industry in reaching people."

Sacramento Beer Week runs from today through Sunday, March 4 and includes a Brewer’s Showcase, a Beerfest and a Beer and Chili Festival. A complete list of events can be found on the Sacramento Beer Week website.
