Cake, anyone? Freeborn Hall tickets on sale Friday

Cake lead singer John McCrea at a surprise Blue Lamp show in 2009

These aren’t the kind of shows you necessarily have to be "in the know" to know about.

Most of Cake’s hometown shows here in Sacramento over the past couple of years have been centered around their occasional surprise shows at the relatively tiny Blue Lamp, with announcements for the gigs usually coming the day before or day of – or not at all.

You may now consider yourself "in the know."

Cake will perform a pair of concerts on Thursday, October 6 and Friday, October 7 at Freeborn Hall on the University of California Davis campus. Tickets are $37 in advance and $42 the day of the show. Tickets are currently in pre-sale, and will be on sale to the general public on Friday, July 22 beginning at 10 a.m. through tickets.com. More info is available here.

The two shows in Davis are the only local dates (and only Northern California dates) on Cake’s calendar for the remainder of the year, with their typically ramshackle touring schedule taking them to a smattering of festivals and random dates at the end of the summer, and to Europe in November.

Cake has spent much of 2011 touring behind the January release of their sixth studio album, "Showroom of Compassion," which continues to showcase that deep-fried country funk style that has remained solely theirs since their earliest days of performing songs from "Motorcade of Generosity" in small Sacramento bars and music venues. The new record features tunes like "Long Time" and "Sick of You" that already appear to be instant classics when performed live alongside their stable of hits that includes "Never There," "Short Skirt, Long Jacket" and "Rock ‘n Roll Lifestyle."
