Sac PD Races to Raise Awareness to Fallen Officers Memorial

Team Sac PD- RAAM Race Team

The Sacramento Police Department is embarking on a unique adventure that will bring national attention to the nearly 19,000 law enforcement officers who have been killed while protecting the communities of this nation.

Starting June 18, 2011, Sacramento Police Department officers will be the first all-law enforcement cycling team to compete in the Race Across America (RAAM), a 3,000-mile bicycle race from California to Maryland.

The twenty member team, 8 riders and 12 crew members, will be racing to raise money and bring attention to the National Law Enforcement Memorial in Washington D.C. The Memorial not only provides a location where the names of fallen officers are memorialized, but assists in various forms of training nationwide. Working with the many federal, state, and local law enforcement agencies along the route, Team SPD will honor all law enforcement officers killed in the line of duty by carrying their names, visiting local and state memorials, and encouraging media coverage of our efforts.

On average, one law enforcement officer is killed in the line of duty somewhere in the United States every 53 hours. In 2011 alone, there have already been 69 law enforcement deaths on the job, an increase of 17% from 2010.
