“One World, Many Stories” — Summer reading fun for all ages at the Sacramento Public Library

Readers of all ages will travel the globe this summer as the Sacramento Public Library presents the 2011 Summer Reading program, One World, Many Stories. Sacramento Public Library locations will offer more than 600 free entertaining and educational summer reading programs, between June 1 and through August 31, 2011, for school-age children, teens, adults, and families.

“While One World, Many Stories makes reading fun for kids, parents and teachers appreciate that children’s participation in Summer Reading helps develop and expand reading skills, encourages lifelong learning habits, and fosters an appreciation of all the services and resources provided by our public library branches in the community,” said Rivkah K. Sass, Sacramento Public Library director.

Everyone is invited to the Summer Reading kick-off celebration on Sunday, June 5, from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m., at the Central Library, 828 I Street, Sacramento, featuring award-winning bilingual children’s author Matthew Gollub. There will be free activities for kids and families, including costumed book characters, face painting, balloon art, henna tattoos, an Instruments of the World demonstration with Catherine Mandella, and craft activities with Very Special Arts. Plus, metered street parking is free on Sunday.

Starting June 1, library customers can either sign up to participate in Summer Reading online at www.saclibrary.org or at their closest Sacramento Public Library branch.

Participants will receive a bingo game card featuring several Summer Reading activities. When a participant finishes a bingo row of activities, he or she will receive a prize: a book for pre-readers, school-age children and teens, and a book bag for adults. Each completed card will be entered in a grand-prize drawing at summer’s end. Winners receive: a $100 Target gift card for pre-readers, a Nook Color eReader and a $50 Barnes & Noble gift card for school-age children, an iPad 2 for teens, and another iPad 2 for adults.

Please telephone the Sacramento Public Library at (916) 264-2920 or visit saclibrary.org for more information. Summer Reading programs are sponsored by the Friends of the Sacramento Public Library, Sacramento Public Library Foundation, and News10, with additional support by Target.
