Dan, ditto your concerns, seems like bike riders want it all...want to ride on the street, ride on the sidewalk, blow through stop signs and red lights, go against traffic on one way streets. Do not dare get in their way, or you get the finger. We ride with same understanding as a motor vehicle, and most other riders just do what feels good, seems. We are from Seattle and you get a ticket there for most of these behaviors. Appears to be one on many other laws that are not enforced in Sac.

Mike M- Yes, and we have been.
My employer made the decision to freeze spending in 2006 when the recession was determined highly likely, and then made 25% staff and cost cutting in 2007 when the economy started the freefall. As senior managers, we took a 40% pay cut. (my wife’s employer went out of business in 2007 and she has resumed work at a 70% pay reduction)
We have operated the company without profit since then, until this last spring as we are seeing a slight pulse to the economy. We are hoping to get 5% of our pay back next year if the economy keeps bumping along on the bottom. As a real kick, our Health insurance rates have climbed about 23% since the new bill has been approved.

"....seem to assume that Social Security is a sufficient retirement plan for everyone....".
No such assumption. I was asking for clarification.
The bulk of Americans do not have proper savings. Social Security is a bottom safety net at best ponzi scheme, and at best there is a 50-50 chance of it being available in 10 years, so personal savings is needed.
One of the big differences is that most Americans do not get a retirement plan, and certainly not one that is funded by the confiscation of others property under the threat of fines or imprisonment.
What is the average age and income of just retired person who worked for the government and in the private sector? That would be interesting to look at.

If you find a person riding a bike inspirational, it is good for you not to be burdened with meaningful matters. A Masters degree is very expensive, so I was thinking he had not paid for his education yet as the opening paragraph portrays him as "With a string of dead-end jobs..." If he writes a book, good for him, but no big deal...there is no shortage.
