AyatollahGondola- Even if that is the impression you filtered out of that interview, it's not true so you should stop saying it before you get sued for slander. Using the word "appears" won't protect you. I know Efren- he's no racist, so just stop it. No matter how many times you repeat it, you cannot make it so- or make it stick.

Clogged Freeways- don't bring any revenue to Sacramento. The BIA has to pay to play if there's going to be a different outcome than that. They just pass it directly to the homebuyers anyway...don't let their cryin' fool you. If the BIA doesn't like it...they can go elsewhere. I don't care. We need a different source of economic development in this County OTHER than new sprawling housing development if we (Sacramentans) are not to be victims of the boom and bust and boom and bust development economy! They should probably stop with the tattoo parlors too, and perhaps move to encouraging tattoo removal businesses as the "next" generation gets all sleeved-up- they are reaching a saturation point.

It seems like a lot more than a little bit of a conflict of interest that Steve Cohn should accept money from Sacramento Natural Gas Storage, LLC for his campaign since he both works for SMUD, (who would buy the Natural Gas from the dangerous underground storage facility located under an existing community of poor people,) and is a representative on the Council who has already said he will have to abstain from voting approval for the proposed project. I wonder if SMUD's aware that one of their PUBLIC UTILITY employees is taking money from a Company who's fishing to do business with them. Pretty straight conflict there!

The former Mayor had very nice words to say about Mary Brill- one of Sacramento's most loved and productive community activists- at her memorial. Mayor Johnson- well he wasn't there because he doesn't even know who she is. Why? Because even though he claims Sac as his hometown, and acts like he's always had his hand in what's going on, he's actually been gone for more than a quarter of a century. It's not a bad thing, he had a fantastic career, and he worked hard to get it, but let's not pretend like he wasn't gone. A great deal of change for the better took place in Sacramento during that time span. I know, because I WAS here. Mayor Fargo's institutional knowledge is missed and should be utilized in some way. As Mayor again perhaps, but some new blood with reasonable aspirations for the amount of power one person should hold over others in City Government would be great too.

They always take pictures of the Elders because that's who the reporters talk to. Also many folks left out of fear of being arrested. Some folks are only there at night because they work during the day, and others just don't want pictures of themselves homeless plastered all over Sacramento and the Internet. These people aren't proud to be homeless and they're not in it for the publicity. Over 200 people have sign the 'no drugs, no alcohol, and no violence' Safe Ground pledge. The 13th & C lot is a very small lot. Only a handfull could fit there.

Go see for yourself and meet the people that stay at Safe Ground and talk to them. You'll learn quickly that no one pees on the Fernandez's house, (they have a portalet on site) that they are quiet and respectful of their neighbor, and that this is all what I said before...a buch of crap and lies.
15 homeless folks who are currently living at 13th & C Sts. were arrested again this morning. Once again we are wasting precious local resources to lock up and needlessly punish people who have no place else to go. Criminalizing sleeping/living for people who have no homes only costs us money. SHRA owns land between 2 existing shelters that is designated by Senate Bill 2 to be used as "Shelter by Right"- SB 2- says the land is held for use as emergency shelter -no matter what the neighbors say, (NO NIMBY-ism.) So the land is there and the existing neighbors are homeless people themselves, all that is lacking is the political will to open it up and get it done. The pissing contest between the Mayor and the City Council & City Manager is bleeding over into this solvable problem. Thank you to the Democratic Party of Sacramento for remaining above the fray of local politics by taking a stand in favor of, and by passing your resolution to support a SAFE Ground designated location or locations for homeless people to be able to rest and live in peace until they can pull their lives together. Your humanity is showing! and your common sense!

If you haven't visited with the homeless people at Safe Ground on 13th & C Sts., you should go...whether you agree with the idea or not. Just go to learn about what they believe can come of a place called Safe Ground, and see if you can't find a common thread with them to help this City make progress on solving the problem. They need to hear what your arguments are in favor and against -just the same as you should listen to them. It's not as black & white an issue as many of you seem to want to boil it down to.
I think it's really great all the Strong Mayors you can point out that really love being Strong Mayors. Do you have any Council Members you can name that really like it? - maybe some that used to be the representatives of their respective districts, but now have very little say in what goes on? I'd like to hear from them. Geez Louise! You know you're not helping him right? Doh!

This is an issue that shouldn't be partisan. Just because it mentions that the Democratic Party of Sacramento County voted to oppose the gang injunction, doesn't make it a Democratic only issue. This is an infringement- on people's civil rights. As stated above, there is already a law that convicted criminals on probation and parole can be told who they can and cannot associate with. But this law makes people without any criminal history at all- who are added to a list by association ONLY, subject to a curfew, search, arrest, etc. without having committed ANY CRIME. This is as much the Freeman's, and the true government-out-of-our-lives Republican's issue as it is the Democratic Party's. They just haven't published their stand on it here in this forum. So please, don't be so emotionally immature. Try keeping your petulant visceral reactions to all things "Democratic" to yourself when there is a topic worthy of discussion by all sides.

The Stop the Power Grab people are not "funded" they are a rag-tag grass-roots bunch of Sacramento City residents and neighbors who never played professional basketball, and don't have the money to hire "Volunteers" to do all their paperwork. There's a minimum to have to - I think it's $1000, and I doubt they're even close. They are doing it all themselves, small town style.
Tell the Mayor and the City Manager to take their damn pissing contest down the road.

Just to address the implication in the beginning of the thread about homeless people having mental illnesses...Many homeless folks do, and are on the streets because they are sick, and not maintaining treatment or they have drug or alcohol addictions or both. Most likely, their families have either tried and failed to help them, or they go undiagnosed and burn relationship bridges everywhere they go, But! not all homeless people are mentally ill. Some are recent to the street because of layoffs and foreclosures- they have no idea where to turn to for help and end up devastated, shocked, in denial and too embarrassed to go to family members. Many people who find themselves without a roof over their heads and no resources, didn't fall from the middle-class but were poor to begin with. Their friends are poor, and their families are poor, and they just can't support one more. Most of the homeless people I meet, were born poor, or were marginally poor and dropped out of school, or life left them with a physical disability or started out with a developmental disability, they had kids too young when they couldn't afford it, they had a financially crippling illness or have just plain never learned how to manage money. Many of the women I meet come from abusive relationships. When you read about women who stay with their abusers for years and decades...the most common-immediate reaction is "why don't they just leave?" Well some do, and they end up homeless on the streets of Sacramento.

Did you know that some homeless people camp outdoors because if they work, they can't stay in a shelter? To stay in a shelter, you have to arrive by 3pm. If you work say a temp job that day- or any job for that matter, you're out on the street for the night. At shelters, there's no plopping on the couch and cracking a beer and watching the game either. Many also prefer to camp outdoors because if your married or in a committed relationship, you can't stay with your spouse- as soon as you enter a shelter, the men and women are separated. It's not just about sleeping arrangements, remember it's from 3pm in the afternoon on. (They also wake you up and throw you out in the streets at 5-6am depending on the shelter. That would about kill me.)

For goodness sake- let these people sleep at night until we can figure out the shelter situation or until we can reach out to each and every one and help them find the type of housing that is suitable for them- until they can reengage with everyday society...they need housing with services attached to them, housing without services attached- shared housing, boarding houses, apartments, etc. We all know there's not enough housing out there and available that is affordable to people with extremely low incomes. The housing that is available costs more than these people can make in a month or 6 months once their out scraping everyday just to survive and being pushed from gutter to bush to bridge and back again.

Where is all the economic development he promised HE would bring to Sacramento? Me thinks this job is harder that he thought it would be. -This State raid on our coffers is not his fault, but "denial" doesn't help, and if we had some new projects and any plans for economic development other than building more suburbs and opening more tattoo parlors, perhaps we'd have a better chance of digging ourselves out of this mess.

They have no nostalgia for a City they weren't raised in, that is just a stepping stone in a life's career. They are just working their way to "Real" job in a "Real" city like Portland or Seattle. We just sit here like lumps and let them chip away at our town. Affordable housing is the answer, but when people are jailed or scattered to the ends of the Earth, they can't get it together and get the help that they require to transition into housing.
Tent Cities are springing up across the country. It's not a problem that's going away anytime soon. We can know it will happen in a ramshackle way on random private property parcels, or we can provide a safe place with some (very little) structure. Please follow the link to a model tent city run by a Catholic Parish in St. Petersburg, FL. http://www.reuters.com/article/topNews/idUSTRE55G01Z20090617 It has set plots, water, sanitation, bike racks and mailboxes. A place where instead of searching for a remote bed in the brush, people can get a good night's sleep, not worry that they will go to jail every second their eyes are closed, and be in touch with the services they need to get their lives together.

They will lay off -what? 41 firefighters...and then complain about the remaining firefighter's overtime. 7 days a week, 24 hours a day doesn't change. Perhaps they could plan the fires, accidents, and emergencies, and schedule appropriately? No more Santa Parades for you Mr. Mayor! For what's a parade without a firetruck? How about we put off some of our ridiculous spending on stupid construction projects such as replacing existing speed "BUMPS" with speed "HUMPS" until the economy's better? Don't believe me? Visit the City's eBid website: http://www.ebidboard.com/public/projects/index.asp?mbrguid=4653B5c9-2122-4249-8c6c-f8586f502aff and tell me the $74,000 wouldn't save firefighter's job!

p.s. Also note that the bid RFP's for the Mayor's personal security is closed....but the amount is not disclosed yet. Here's the link: http://www.cityofsacramento.org/generalservices/procurement/bid-results/2009.cfm

Firefighting isn't a critical service. It is THE critical service. Without it we become the Wild West once again. Overtime costs the City less money than hiring more firefighters. The OVERHEAD costs of one new employee's, training, benefits, retirement, medical, dental, uniforms, boots, food, etc. would be more than the overtime worked by all of the firefighters noted in the Sacramento Bee's article. So much for the Mayor's office having the Union's backs. They never should have endorsed him.
