If a Disney princess decided to become a country pop superstar, then that superstar would be Taylor Swift. She was so perfect, it seemed abnormal. Everything about the Grammy Award-winning musician Saturday night was whimsically on-cue as she performed to a sold-out show at the Power Balance Pavilion, promoting her third album, “Speak Now.” “This is the first time we’re headlining a big arena concert in Sacramento,” Swift said. “I can’t believe 13,000 of you decided to be here than anywhere else on a Saturday night.” Swift’s movements on stage, while performing and speaking to the crowd, were that of the White Queen’s from Tim Burton’s “Alice in Wonderland,” completely ethereal, while
A child is reported abused or neglected every minute in America. The Child Abuse Prevention Center is working to change that. The CAP Center serves more than 140,000 children annually and manages the Child Abuse Prevention Council of Sacramento, Inc., Safe Kids California, Lift the Children and Prevent Child Abuse California. Pour for Prevention was a benefit held for the CAP Center that incorporated food, art and, of course, lots of wine, with 100 percent of the proceeds going toward preventing child abuse. Over 16 vintners and eateries participated, and 15 artists displayed works in Jon Stevenson's historic three-story home/gallery/special events venue located on 1724 N St. “Eighty pe
To those unfamiliar with wresting, it’s a somewhat confusing sport. It’s a bunch of men acting really manly but with tan, smooth, hair-free thighs and chests that glisten with baby oil while fighting in neon spandex panties. WWE’s SmackDown at the Power Balance Pavilion on Tuesday was the first time I had ever been to a wrestling event. I knew there would be a storyline but was surprised by the length of it, the amount of "back story" each match contained. It was like a soap opera for 10-year-old boys. And there were a lot of 10-year-olds there. A lot of families. Commercials for toys based on wrestlers aired between matches on a big screen, cotton candy was sold in each aisle and an an
A harem of attractive girls with their midriffs showing and about five men — two wearing eyeliner, one dressed as a taco and the rest disguised as Aladdin — showed up to Fairytale Town’s Moonlight Costume Ball: Arabian Nights. Fairytale Town is a park usually enjoyed by kids. It’s a place where they are able to run around, pet farm animals in paddocks and play on fairytale-themed objects like oversized cement blocks of Swiss cheese and slides shaped like shoes, but, on Saturday night, only those aged 18 and over were allowed entrance. Alcohol was served at two different tents. There were food trucks, a psychic, belly dancers and a raffle. Sacramento band Hero’s Last Mission performed,
Vincent Falk’s got eye issues, Freudian parent problems and a very interesting taste in suits. But how did these characteristics evolve into Falk’s passion for spinning atop Chicago bridges for passing tour boats below? “Vincent: A Life in Color,” is an award winning documentary by Jennifer Burns that intended to find out. Falk is deemed legally blind and has had glaucoma since he was a child. He was abandoned at birth and lived in an orphanage until he was eight. Despite less than ideal circumstances, Falk refused to let his trials define him. In High School, Falk was part of the National Honor Society, the chess club, the debate team, and the diving team. He’s a college graduate, us
