Contact Ms. Fatima Malik - she runs an organic public school garden in inner city Del Paso Heights. Luther Burbank High School - she is also connected to Anne Marie Kennedy's "GEO Academy" at the same school - it is a youth leadership academy designed to prevent teen pregnancy - drug/alcohol use and drop-out prevention, gang prevention program. The teens from one of the poorest neighborhoods in Sac wind up graduating with a high school diploma and transfer on full ride scholarships to First Tier universities - or good blue collar high tech trade schools.

Ms. Fatima Malik teaches nutrition and wellness studies at Luther Burbank High School - Bill Maynard of the sacto community garden project was a graduate of that H.S. - he helps them with their organic school garden project. Fatima is an employee of Health Education Council in West Sacramento - which helps fund in part this phenomenal program.

And we are not clueless, in fact she is the 3rd generation of actors in our family, and I have been involved in the thespian world here in Sac since the late 70's. Judging is always going to be problematic in my mind, because it's judging.

I chose to write about an anime club because I had no understanding about why people were so fascinated with characters from comic books I, too, found myself oddly intrigued by the end of my research and finally understood why they had so much fun idolizing the characters.

As someone not very well-versed in anime, it was fascinating to see so many different sides. Anthony hit the nail on the head with the stranger's heaven comment; when you are surrounded by like 3,000 people in costume laughing, dancing and having an inordinate amount of fun, it really intrigues you. I totally did some research on anime after Saturday. I was kind of jealous when I couldn't recognize characters.

I think the sword was made out of wood. It was massive, "Cloud" had to rest it on his shoulder to carry it, and when the hilt was on the ground it was taller than him. The costume weaponry was incredibly detailed. www.cosplay.com is an interesting site about anime costumes.

You definitely gave a great account of the event. It must have been a memorable experience for someone who is not into that scene. Did the convention make you curious about anime and the culture?

Also, your pictures are wonderful, Anthony. The colors are very vibrant and richly detailed. Did you put some more on Flickr?

Great story Sonia! You really did the event justice.

I went to a Star Trek convention when I was in 5th grade, and it was NOTHING like this. Walking through the halls of the Radisson, I felt like I had died and awoken in a stranger's heaven. It was awesome and profoundly surreal.

Oh, and the kid with the big sword was Cloud from Final Fantasy 7. It's great to see kids these days appreciate the classics.

I don't know what charity will be benefitted Aug. 26, but David Mansch and Richard Borill (owners of Hamburger Patties) said they would like to partner up with the SPCA and also gay oriented charities.

I've never put 'bingo' and 'excitement' in the same thought before, but Drag Queen Bingo sounds like a wild evening. The raunchy humor is great - nobody can push the limits like a sweet transvestite. Looks like there was a HUGE turnout of young contestants, and with 10 prize winners out of 75-ish people, you're looking at some pretty good odds.
Couple questions: How much is the buy-in? Also, do you know what charity will benefit next week?

All local thespians really like the awards idea but once you see the lack of screening for judges you see why this can't be taken too serious. All of us actors talk about it and anyone who denies it is either new to the region or clueless. Fix the judges and you fix the credebility of the awards.

"Distro" is just shorthand for "distribution," it refers to any centralized system to distribute materials or information. The independent media world often has its own distribution networks, generally individuals who handle orders and mailing from their house or a small office. Sometimes independent distributors become large-scale operations in their own right, but most are fairly modest operations.

The LA Times did an extensive investigative series earlier this year into home-care fraud, SEIU, etc. Many other media have picked up the story - here's a bit from the San Diego newspaper:
"Then there is the bombshell April 13 investigation by the Los Angeles Times that found the $5.4 billion In Home Supportive Services program to be riddled by fraud. Attempts to investigate this fraud are severely limited. Why? Almost certainly because of SEIU political pressure during the drafting of bills dealing with in-home care. Whether dealing with the state or federal government, it sure is good to be the Service Employees International Union."
Any more questions?

Is the SEIU not representative of the workers? That would seem to be a big disconnect, if not.
Also, I am always very suspect of anyone who can take the day off from work to attend a protest about not having work. Seems at complete adds to their arguement.
This organization can totally rebrand itself as one that will not tolerate or accept , better yet even roots out, and exposes fraud from its ranks. But then they would need to do that.

While I'm sympathetic to state workers getting shafted in this horrible mess, the SEIU has generated a lot of bad PR the past few months. Home care worker fraud is unacceptable. The new TV commercials showing SEIU heads demanding the legislature do their bidding or face their wrath come election day, is about as damning as it gets. Public opinion is not in SEIU's favor and I hope the governor follows up on homecare fraud and those SEIU members who are abusing our tax dollars.

Thanks David, my estimation is around 400. I was talking to a group of previous SAMMIE attendees and they said this years turnout was a success despite the heat. I think people really enjoyed the option of having different areas to mingle around and activities to check out. Also, there was no segregating of the musicians and fans, no special blocked off area where they were designated to drink water and look cool before they came on. A band would come right off a stage and be able to immediately talk with their fans and freinds. The result was a lot of love for the community and its talented members :)

Hi Oracle - Well, it certainly does come off as criticism, but we're not afraid of criticism! But I disagree with your premise: that we cover a lot of local bands. Which ones are you referring to? MC Rut is one, but given that they just won three SAMMIES, that seems fairly justified.
You may want to make a more scientific study - we actually cover very few local bands. Sacramento News and Review writes about many more than we do - but you may be disappointed to know that we plan to write about more.
Fortunately, there are many other stories to read here!

Props to all the Sammie-goers for braving the Sacramento summer heat to support local artists! Events like this really show how diverse our city is, and it's great to have to those artists that have been touring to come back to their hometown. Woohoo Sacramento music scene!

As a hetero,I have marched on streets (commuting to work) for decades now, with absolutely no trouble. This, even though my clothes did come out of a closet. Wish Sonia had been around to interview me. Sounds like a wonderful, festive, lighthearted day, and I don't enry you the task of getting all those names correct.

JT, I think the community echos your concerns about appropriately filling the ex-classrooms. A big issue for the committee was that the sites retain the option to be re-used as schools. They also are advising the board that the leases be no longer than 3 years, and are adamantly opposed to any property being sold. It will be interesting to see what the Board of Education decides to do with the six sites, and how much they heed this committee's advice.
