In response to whatsit2U, the second meeting in the series of three, is actually taking place downtown at the Citizen's Hotel on J Street. Angelique placed all the meetings in the three areas of her district, North Natomas, South Natomas and downtown. I attended the first meeting and there were several people there from downtown who wanted their concerns to be heard - and they were. I know Angelique pretty well, and she will take care of ALL the constituents in her district, not just those in North Natomas. I have already witnessed this. She has been supportive of South Natomas - even before she decided to run for office. I guess, as you say, time will tell and prove you wrong.

I am not a fan of Ms Ashby. Let's just see what she actually gets done when she is just one part of the City Counsel. I think she is only concerned with North Natomas and the residents there in, who think the city of Sacramento should revolve around their need for instant gratification. Forget Yuppies..they are way worse! I will wait to see her fail and let the people who voted for her see that she is nothing new or special and I believe will do a much worse job as a City Counsel member then Mr. Tretheway ever did!

This is how community activists make it happen. It's about time that we developed some consensus and made our presence known. I believe that we are nearly twice the size of any other district and yet no-one knows we exist - especially when it comes time to fulfill promises for community amenities. I'm confident that her one-two punch of 1) proactivity and 2) bringing people together will serve us well. I really look forward to seeing what a high energy leader can do with District One.

Great article, great momentum on Ashby's part.

On a related note, might want to downplay that "North Natomas is #1 neighborhood" award by Sac Magazine. Wouldn't want the people holding the purse strings to think Natomas residents are all giddy and everything is copacetic. All in all North Natomas is not merely suffering from growing pains; it is the land the city of Sac forgot.

Anytime you have to have an "adopt a park" program you know you have severe neglect on the part of the city. Making residents responsible for upkeep of their own parks is shameful. If you're going to do that at least stop making them pay mello-roos tax supplements. Seems like it would be criminal to assess taxes for services you can't even provide..!?? Class action lawsuit seems appropriate.

Abandoned buildings, major anchor retail clients closing their doors, crime, blight, poor performing schools, graffiti, a disproportionate amount of low income housing, excessive loitering on the part of bored teens, unchecked curfew, unfulfilled amenity promises, neglected parks, totally unchecked street racing on Del Paso Road....

Those are just a FEW of the things that make North Natomas an undesirable place to live and will keep property values lower than they should be.

Personally I think there is a LOT of work to do be done in Natomas (in all of D1 and Sheedy's district as well, for that matter), and Sac Magazine's award was not appropriate at all. That would be my position if I was D1 council person. I'd say "thanks but no thanks." After all, if what Sac Mag says about North Natomas is correct, then why the $#@% isn't Ray Tretheway still in office.. ?

Lite Rail was planned into the original development of Natomas. The easements were in place. Rather than go forward, the planners and public services allowed the newcomers to prevent stops from being located as planned.

The easements for track were already laid out and ready for implementation. "The clear handout to investors and developers" has already occurred. That's why we don't have the promised/planned public transit in Natomas, nor the promised "Pedestrian Oriented Development."

I definitely think a "back to the drawing board" approach is in order, especially in light of the "fiscal emergency" that Regional Transit is facing these days.

Light rail is enormously expensive to build and is inflexible once it is built. The one mile "green line" extension downtown is often cited as a success, but it was one of the (if not THE) most expensive miles of train track ever laid. (Does "green" refer to environmentalism, or the outrageous cost?)

On the other hand, Bus Rapiid Transit (BRT) is far less expensive to deploy and brings many of the same benefits that light rail would, with the added benefit of flexibility after the fact and faster time frames to operation.

Of course, people like the idea of riding a train and it may seem on the surface to be preferable to riding on a "bus." However, Bus Rapid Transit systems are hardly comparable to ordinary buses. Imagine clean, state-of-the-art multi-section buses that have their own preferential rights of way and traffic signalization priority that get you to your destination almost as fast as a train would, but having the system up and running in months instead of years, with minimal construction interference. That's what cities are doing around the world these days.

Given the infamous unpopularity surrounding the current chosen light rail alignment option in South Natomas (Truxel Road), the extreme costs associated with a bridge to span the American River, and dire fiscal conditions at Regional Transit, I believe we cannot afford not to give Bus Rapid Transit a serious (re)consideration. We need new realistic vision at Regional Transit, starting with its board of elected officials who are not married to old ideas and old unrealistic pledges. We need creative, progressive, fiscally conservative thinking to get us out of a place where 70 percent of growth has occurred three times faster than it should have with virtually no substantial improvements in transportation infrastructure. Bus Rapid Transit is the mass transit of the future and we need to recognize and embrace the concept before we waste one more dollar on or one more day waiting for a light rail expansion.

It is quite unfortunate that a member of Mr. Tretheways staff and campaign managing company is resorting to such unfair tactics to try to win an election. Mr. Roth is trying to cover his tracks by changing his story, first it is a complaint by phone call from a resident and now it is an email, he said he sent it to 311 but now he thinks he forgot to send it?! Too many lies! He either needs to resign or be fired and Capital Campaigns needs to be fired for their part in this. If none of these actions happens it is because this to be the status quo (aka no accountability) for Councilmember Tretheways office.

If you are ok with these actions from your councilmembers office, vote for Ray. If you want true leadership and accountability from your councilmember, vote for Angelique Ashby. The choice is yours.

I echo Holly's comments. The "Treatheway boys" are behaving like the stars of the movie "Dumb and Dumber." I also admire Angelique's strength and dogged determination to fight for her community. She is a neighborhood champion who is also smart, savvy and grown a great deal as a candidate during the course of this campaign. I think Natomas residents would be lucky to have her representing them on the council.

I've had enough signs removed from my front yard in Land Park, not exactly the bastion of GOPsters, ALL supporting Democrats and progressive issues, to repaper the walls of my kitsch-in.... I guess Republicans secretly wish they could be Dem's, but it would be like coming out to their parents as gay or to the party cadre who would beat them for doing so...

I just find it at least suspect that a camera was at the ready when Coppin removed the Ashby sign... Is there some sort of subtrefuge going on to harm Tretheway's campaign??? I'm sure one could make a statistical probability case of the unlikeliness of such a coincidence, but doing so might take a chalkboard or two, and I've gotta pay bills...

There's more to this story, nonetheless...

And isn't it interesting that the normally snarling behaviour of Ashby has been amplified by this event affording her official 'victim' status, which she seems to be playing to the hilt...

I pity the people of Natomas -- they don't realize how toxic she really is...

One would think from the hullaballoo that this is the first time a campaign sign has ever been removed from a private lawn or park strip. Wake up to reality. When I informed the city the first time it happened staff told that me it was against city code for such signs to be located on park strips AND whoever removed was acting legally within the code. Further if I should find any placed there again, I should remove it myself and place it in my yard.

Before nearly every election signs have been removed from various properties in Midtown and some subsequently destroyed whether on the park strip or on a yard. I don't ever recall it happening with a governor or state legislator sign--always local elections.

Outside my place, Heather Fargo signs were removed three times this last election and one at least in each prior council and mayoral elections. So I've learned that "put 'em up? someone will take 'em down." With all the graffiti vandalism and other criminal behavior out there, I'll settle for someone getting their kicks out of taking a campaign sign down.

Unfortunately, I believe this is not the first time Team Tretheway has used the City code as an excuse to remove signs they disagree with. During the Light Rail on Truxel campaign a couple of years ago, a resident on Truxel Road had a large "No Lightrail on Truxel" banner on their fence and it was removed as a code violation. I agree that if you look at locations in District One you will find multiple signage violations (as there were in the past) that are not being addressed. The code should be applied equitably.

One sees fear and arrogance at work here. The fear is related to the ground breaking of the new fire station where Ray Treathaway was taking credit for the accomplishment. Yet the fire and police attendees, who support Angelique Ashby, knew that the truth was that Angelique, as a private citizen, made the fire station happen through her shear force of will. Treathaway, who represents this area, did not make it happen.

Arrogance can be seen in the blatant and very public daytime removal of an opponents campaign sign that was in the area of the fire station ground breaking. An event chock full of Ashby supporters as well as police and fire department supporters. The arrogance is further proven by the subsequent insulting lies and rationalizations. It is scary to think that the campaign manager and city paid top aide have so little concern for the intelligence of the community that they would commit the act in broad daylight then blatantly lie about it and make statements that no-one believes. Even in light of their unethical actions a simple and honest statement would have put this issue to rest. Had one of them said, "I'm sorry, I shouldn't have done it, it was wrong, and I'm sorry I made my candidate look so bad." We wouldn't be talking about this now. It is their hubris that makes this such an issue with the public.

A very good point, Natoman. But there is an issue in parts of North Natomas. We used to live on N. Park Drive, above Inderkum High School, and my home office had a very clear view of the bus stop. I would look inside the bus whenever it stopped, and usually only the bus driver was in the bus, about half a doxen times I saw one rider in the bus with him. Over the period of a few years!
It seems to me that RT should be doing some very serious analysis of ACTUAL ridership statistics of bus routes that mirror what they want to accomplish with the DNA line....BEFORE they spend gazillions of dollars to lay those tracks down. Or am I all misguided and uninformed?

I have less of a problem with Tretheway failing to save Natomas bus service than I do with the fact that there is so little bus service here to be saved. Look at the map in today's Bee of the areas that lie outside of a half-mile of a bus route -- most of it is in North Natomas. An area with over 40,000 population located a few miles from downtown has only one pathetic route to downtown, and that doesn't even run nights or evenings to begin with. So did he not try to improve the bus service here (if it's not light rail, he can't be bothered?), or did he try and couldn't get it done? Either way, it's one more example of Tretheway failing his constituents, and one more reason he deserves to be voted out.

Dear "You", It seems to me that Keith is simply endeavoring to set the record straight. As he said, Ray was either confused (which is a bit scary) or he was dissembling when he made inaccurate statements about the net results of the RT cuts in Natomas. Actually, this is what the "Journalists of Old" used to do....it was part of their job description....to attend various meetings and events and to critically analyze the assertions of politicians, to do research and due diligence and then to share those results with the public, so that we could distinguish between fact and fantasy. Since this is a dying art, politicians are making wild and groundless statements, feeling quite secure that their "inaccuracies" will never come into question. I, for one, have no problem with someone bringing the truth into the light. And I am also a firm believer In "Out with the Old and in with the New" when the "Old" has not been working very well for District One for a very long time.
