I don't think posting singles ads online is necessarily about selling yourself physically anymore. Check out this study done by Sperling: http://www.bestplaces.net/docs/studies/DatingCities_list.aspx. A good percentage of the city's dating success rate comes from online dating.

Besides, in an age when we are surrounded by our cell phones, ipods, ipads and sleek laptops, how else are we going to meet someone?

I had no idea that that building on Q Street is over a hundred years old! While that no doubt makes the building more retro, the interior of the H Street location has a more retro vibe than the interior of the Q Street location. It's bright, it's mis-matched, it's what I would imagine my mom's apartment in the '70's to look like.

My guess is that he ran for mayor for purposes of accountability. If Kevin Johnson was the city manager, he could do everything that he wants to do as a strong mayor, but without accountability. As an appointed rather than elected official, he wouldn't have to answer to the public for his decisions.

Personally, I like the strong mayor initiative. Although some of the campaign tactics may be a little questionable (http://www.sacramentopress.com/headline/2200/Strong_Mayor_Weak_Ethics), I would still rather the major decisions be made by someone who is directly accountable to the public than by someone who doesn't feel the pressure to answer to the public's demands.

Right now the council does have all of those powers - the power to appoint/dismiss officials, primary control over the budget, and mandatory approval of mayoral candidates. It is true that, should Mayor Johnson's campaign be successful, that they will lose primary control over these issues. However, they will still act as the legislative body, approving/vetoing his decisions and maintaining a system of checks and balances.

Technically there already is a centralized authority in one person - the city manager. Kevin Johnson's proposal is to transition that existing authority from the unelected city manager to the elected mayor. The city council will lose some executive powers (like having primary control over the budget) but will still retain all legislative powers and approval/disproval rights.

Kevin Johnson doesn't have any power right now. All of the decisions are being made by the city council and by the city manager.

And I agree with William Burg - the term "responsive and transparent government" is completely vague. I think the term "strong mayor" lends more definition to what Kevin Johnson is trying to accomplish, which is a transition of existing power from the unaccountable, unelected city manager to the elected mayor.

Also, that's a really interesting point about the potholes being used as an example on the initiative. I wouldn't expect either the mayor or the city manager to take action. I'm wondering if the citizen's group wrote that or if that's something that the mayor expressly said.

I've heard good things about Forever Tattoo on 16th Street from someone who got a 1/2 sleeve done there. She said the artists did great work and were really friendly. Another girl I talked to got hers done at American Graffiti. She said the people weren't as nice, but they did great art.

I myself actually had one done a couple of years ago at Bonehead on K Street, and I was quite pleased with both my tattoo and my tattoo artist's friendly demeanor.

After reading this section, I realized how little of Sacramento's history I really know. And I've lived here almost my entire life! It is really interesting to read that the area used to be Sutter's Embarcadero, and that Sutter's son, John Jr., is the one who mapped out the street system.

I know you have a vast knowledge of Sacramento's history - I'm really interested in reading about it from your perspective.

I'm not as familiar with this particular area, or its history, as I would like to be. I was going off of the DEIR, which says "the project area currently consists of underutilized land, a weathered warehouse building (Towe Auto Museum), the Pioneer Reservoir, an asphalt-capped remediation site, and vacant land, and is not considered
scenic" (5.1-19). What I meant is that currently there is nothing there - no houses, office buildings, etc. - that will be affected by any aesthetic changes.

Those are three really good questions. Who will pay for the parking lots between 10th and 8th, and what will they replace? And, if customers already don't fancy walking a block and a half from public transit (which some don't), will they really want to walk from a parking place that is farther away?

This is already a concern. There is a parking lot located across the street from Fox&Goose, next door to Mt. Shasta Naturals. According to the business owners, people who work for the city often use up that parking during work hours. They also informed me that, if customers can't find immediate parking, they just leave. They don't even bother looking for parking that may be a bit further away. Parking availability is already a huge concern - now they have to worry about proximity, too.

I think it would be awesome for Sacramento to reinvent itself into, well, itself. It is silly for us to try to be like any other city. I used that comment in my story to demonstrate the city's perspective on all of its current development projects. A lot of aspects of the Docks Area Plan are based on how well they function in Oregon - the plan uses pictures of Portland as references for development - and even Kevin Johnson likened Sacramento to San Antonio.

I really hope that this development project works out for the betterment of Sacramento, turning it into "a place where most people could live, work, shop and play within a radius they could comfortably walk," as Mr. Burg said. That is my personal ideal of a city. But, I also hope that the city can reconcile the parking issues too, so that local business owners can stay in business.
