Wow, I had high hopes seeing the title of this article, but it became very clear that this place doesn't have a clue about vegetarian/vegan food. If you can't be bothered to learn and abide by the restrictions, stop pretending you can. Just say that your menu is not appropriate for us so we don't waste our time and money. I was looking forward to finding a new place to eat. I'll keep looking.

I am so pleased to learn this restrauant is open to feedback from their customers. I wish this place would create a WHOLE GRAIN, ORGANIC ramen - perhaps from organic brown rice flour, millet flour, buckwheat flour combined? It is so easy to make whole grain organic noodles - so I trust that the owners of this cafe will experiment creating a truly WHOLE GRAIN ORGANIC ramen. I'd advise them to go to Sacramento Natural Foods coop - check out the flour bulk bins and ask the coop cooking school staff at Community Learning Center - like Eileen's Kitchen for advice how to create an ORGANIC WHOLE GRAIN ramen!

I've been eating 100% organic, whole foods, plant based diet for 43 years. What I see that is quite prevalent is what I call "Vegan Junk Food". Many vegans eat lots of industrialized, highly processed, supermarket brand food - white flour, white rice, white sugar, hydrogenated trans fats like deep fried Wesson Oil. Although i do certainly acknowledge there are MANY vegans who are devoted to organic, nutrient dense, unprocessed whole food type diet - plenty of vegans eat so much of that "fake cheese" and "fake meat" substitutes - full of conventionally grown - geneticially engineered GMO soy/wheat/canola oil ingredients. Much of the vegan processed food is made from cheap, low quality vegetable gums. Not really "food" but what Michael Pollan calls "a food like substance". Lots of that processed vegan food is canned in tin cans with Biphesenol coated lining - or wrapped in plastic packaging that off-gasses Biphesenol. Most of the packaged brands of national manufacturers of "vegan" food sold in natural food stores is UNHEALTHY junk food - just no animal protein, no animal fats in it.

I highly recommend to go see "FORKS OVER KNIVES" indie documentary at Crest Theatre, K Street Mall - it is a brilliant film -just as good as "Food, Inc." It is about the virtues of a plant based diet.

Also, correction:

3. While the broth and ramen in the vegan dish are vegan-friendly, not all the toppings are. If you are a vegetarian or vegan, you should steer clear of the bamboo shoots (menma), shiitake mushrooms and tomago.

The bamboo shoots are not "toppings" as you might think. It is not an add on. Rather it comes standard on the vegan ramen. So if I am a vegan or vegetarian and I order the vegan ramen (I wouldn't even order the vegetarian ramen because it is not vegetarian) I will get a dish with bamboo shoots that while seeming vegan are actually made with meat.

Disclosure: I eat pretty much everything. I am not myself either vegan or vegetarian. This is not personal.

The issue is the use of the terms "vegetarian" and "vegan." Use the terms in well established ways to mean what they mean. If you call something "vegetarian" or "vegan" that dish should be what it says it is.

This is all nice but most of Old Sacramento is commercial and history is the decoration. It's true that Old Sacramento does need a makeover and in true Sacramento fashion these proposals will do very little for the effort and expense. Old Sacramento is the product of the 1970's bicentennial era. It has a complete tourist feel and look about it. Like some run down old west theme park. These proposals will only contribute to this. Sacramentians need to reclaim their city's waterfront district and start to reconnect it to central city. We need to move beyond the 1970's and we can start by planting street trees . The covered sidewalks are great but they do not provide all of the benefits that trees do. It's odd that the place that receives the most visitors doesn't have the urban tree canopy that the rest of city is known for and rightly proud of. If it were any other place in downtown trees would be required. If they started just today to restore Old Sacramento they would incorporate street trees. Planting street trees in Old Sacramento seems so simple and yet it would make the most positive improvement, in the shortest amount of time, and with the least cost for it's return.

It was very fortunate that parking limit was raised from 1 1/2 hr to 2 hr a few years ago as 1 1/2 was never enough time to eat a good sit down meal in Old Sac. Parking is a bit different down there as it is enforced everyday, & enforced until 8PM, time to catch the dinner crowd. Parking is a cash cow for Sac & so is writing tickets. I have witnessed swarms of enforcement on occasions particularily at 10AM enforcement start time & 6PM when other areas of downtown have their stop enforcement time. With the speed that the enforcement can write a ticket, you can easily be written up for a violation in the time it takes you to go to the change machine & back. No recourse once that ticket is written but to pay the ticket with a protest letter in hopes that the ticket will be reversed.

Ben: Parking enforcement is fiercer in Old Town because it is at such a premium there. The fact that street parking is always so full is a clear indicator that parking enforcement isn't much of a deterrent to Old Sac visitors--in fact, it suggests that they aren't charging enough for parking! (Supply and demand 101: If you have a shortage of supply, you are undercharging your customer.)

As to downtown parking, enough people come to downtown Sacramento during the day to fill up most if not all of the street parking in a similar fashion. At night, there is no charge for street parking, so the only people who would risk a ticket are jerkwads who block a driveway, a fire hydrant, etcetera. If their complaint is that there isn't a huge parking lot in front of everything the way there is in Roseville, I have little sympathy.

Curmudgeon: Again, I encourage you to actually read the article before grumbling, as the article actually does mention the plan for the northern portion of the SSRR to extend its operation to the Sacramento Zoo. "The first would run from Old Sacramento to the Sacramento Zoo, stopping at the Crocker Art Museum, Miller Park and [...] Baths."

Although considering that you called for the removal of cars in Old Sac and then criticized those who call for the removal of cars in Old Sac in the same sentence, maybe you're getting more out of grumbling than reading?

Parking enforcement revenue is yet another reason cars can't be eliminated from Old Sac. Not that the anti-auto Luddites won't try....perhaps they can rip up the pavement and have dusty, muddy and horse manured streets and see what that does to tourism too.

A Freeport to Hood tourist rail alone is too disjointed and won't help Old Sac, nor will it connect to the Zoo, Fairytale Town, and other attractions that would boost local tourism. You might as well go enjoy the Sac River Train from Woodland to West Sac on the other side of the river, which is already there.

In the sense that the SSRR probably cannot go again to Locke, Walnut Grove and Isleton, which would make for wonderful scenery and history, it is indeed "former".

Yeah, and they'll swear to never come back the next time they come downtown and get a ticket too. Parking enforcement isn't any "fiercer" than it has been, you can confirm this by asking the city about the amount of parking revenue collected and number of parking enforcement agents on the street.

The SSRR does plan a Napa Valley styled excursion, running from Freeport to Hood and skipping Land Park entirely. It was mentioned in the article. Riding through suburban backyards wouldn't be that dramatic a train ride anyhow--compared to riding along the river or down into the Delta, it's definitely not the scenic part of the route. And there's nothing "former" about the SSRR--go see it operate this weekend, or take a ride!

"The 200 year flood protection for the area won't be realized when the dam work is complete, unless the downstream levee work is complete as well. It's a system - and if the dam is complete, while it will
be able to pass that much water, the downstream levees couldn't handle it yet - so we're also working to improve the levees downstream, but it's not likely they'll be done when the dam is complete, so it won't quite be '200 year' - but it is a HUGE step toward getting us there."

Oh what a shame? sorry you must not understand what these events really mean. Anchor steam brewery is located in San Francisco California, to us they are are "local" neighbors we are proud to represent their product. We have been reaching out to local brewerys In Sacramento to feature their beers as well, Brew it up is our next dinner we are excited about. All of our product is all local that includes produce from the farmers market and local farms for our beef. In order to get more local brewerys to participate in these events, getting the word out is a big factor. We are lucky to that Sacramento press wrote this article! we are hoping that this will extend the invitation and encourage more local brewerys and people to support their local resturants, Chefs, and these unique events that happen in your city. I encourage you beer lover to attend, both restaurants work very hard to put these events together and we stand by what we do, and its a fun way to have a little education on what your eating and drinking without being bored. Thank you for your comment/ question. I hope this gave you a little more information.

Funny. My kids are 20-ish and I am definitely less conservative than them. But I'm not sure they know that, hence these kids interviewed might not know their parents either. Their parents grew up in the 60s and 70s so you never know.

My mom (83) would totally dig Burning Man. My father (85) would only find it kind of pointless. Of course, the trip would kill them.

Where would I never taken them? Anywhere that tolerates people who think "gangster" as adjective is a compliment.

David Mandel here for the program that's the subject of the story. Thanks to the Sac. Press for running it and especially to Nha Nguyen for working so hard to make sense out of our complicated situation. Her comment above clarifies most of the issues that weren't 100% in the text. But I'm still concerned that the headline about "reopening" misleads readers into thinking that we are expanding. While one new project is starting, in the aggregate we are shrinking, for complicated reasons that start with the loss of all core funding for the original hotline mission -- from the state (vetoed by Gov. Schwarzenegger two budgets ago) and the federal Administration on Aging, which has stopped direct funding of senior legal hotlines nationwide. Our program and many others are having to close or cut way back. The hundreds of thousands of seniors we collectively could have provided with crucial legal help but will now go without are the biggest losers.

Mr. Mandel wanted to make clear that statewide services for the hotline will only include: pension, housing, CalFresh and domestic violence. Furthermore, the recent grant from the U.S. Department of Justice allows the SLH to help domestic violence victims with a broad range of legal issues, not only the domestic violence itself.

In regards to funding hopes, the SLH estimates $500,000 in core funding, as opposed to a multitude of specific projects alone, in order to fully service California seniors; the point is the specific projects are easier to manage with the core funding as backup for any of them.

Lastly, the SLH is looking for trained attorneys or paralegals willing to make a significant ongoing commitment as volunteers.
