The Board of California Stage thanks you for that clarification. California Stage has existed for over 20 years--Capitol Stage on the riverboat is a more recent entry into the Sacramento live theatre world.

"Reefer Madness" is not produced by California Stage but its theater company does rent the largest theatre in the R-25 arts complex. At the same time as "Reefer Madness" but playing in the Wilkerson Theatre just around the corner on 25th St., is the Broadway hit comedy, "My First Time" . This performance consists of several women and men describing their first sexual experience, which will double the enjoyment for theatre goers.

The third stage, Three Penny Theatre is dark at this time.

thsas: Military benefits are earned, but they are still paid for by tax dollars. While wanting education is enough to enable many to pursue it, the level of subsidy that we used to provide for education made it possible for more people to pursue it without sinking themselves so far into debt, and the return on investment was substantial. Now that we've decided to stop making that investment, is it any surprise that the return is dropping off, and fewer people are able to afford an education?

Military benifits are earned, with a low income but good benifits to balance it out. Wages paid in the service are very low, and offset with current service and post service benifits. The benifits are a way of paying for the service agreement. No arguement on benifits of education. If it has value, and you want it bad enough, you will figure out how to pay for it.

Those "military service benefits" were paid for by the government, and if they attended CSU schools they were attending taxpayer-subsidized schools at subsidized rates. The result was the best-educated generation in American history and plenty of working-class people moving into professional careers--through hard work, studying, dedication--and taxpayer subsidy. It seems to me that it was worth the investment.

Either way Tony, 90% or 60% is unsustainable when each employee pays in around 5% of each pay check to then be supported for 10 to 15 years on this pittance of contribution. Get real man, cash out now before promises made to you are broken and you get a fraction of what you were promised. Have you seen what's going on in Greece? California will follow soon and default on union promises and pensions.

I used the Calpers example because the CSU uses Calpers - I know, because I'm in it.

...but people go to school so they can get good jobs! It becomes a circular argument.

A big part of why Americans were so well-educated and wealthy in the mid-20th century is because we had very good, very well-subsidized public colleges, and public programs like the GI Bill that allowed regular folks to study there. Instead of going into low-wage jobs like their parents, they moved into the professions. The result was that they made more money, bought houses, paid higher taxes--and became a bountiful dividend as a result of an investment in public education.

The tuition that out of state and international students pay is the full cost of college. That difference is paid for by taxpayers for in-state students. For the past few years, the costs of summer school have been similarly subsidized by taxpayers but that is changing. Summer fees will return to unsubsidized tuition rates, as they were several years ago.

Stephen, you're right, it's about priorities. Taxpayers are often asked "do you like A?" and "do you like B?" They don't often get asked "do you prefer A or B?" or "if you like both A and B but only had enough for one or the other or part of both, what would you choose?"

Some of the rhetoric gets a little too crude for meaningful comparison. A statement like "schools not prisons" on a protester's sign loses its utility as presumably we don't want no prisons at all. But it is worth noting that every time we send a casual marijuana user to prison, or send a non-violent felon to prison for life on a three strikes conviction, the amount we spend per year to incarcerate them stops something like 6 potential students from entering college. So a message like "fewer prisons to allow for more schools" is quite meaningful - it just happens to be harder to fit on a sign.

We somehow manage to spend so much on every prisoner that you could take somebody out of prison, enroll them in school, AND pay for a dorm room and a meal plan and still save money! I'm not saying that would be a good idea, merely pointing out how expensive prisons have become - we spend more on them than on all of higher education.

All the retiring employees can receive 90% retirement!?

Under the relatively standard Calpers plan, employees would need to work 36 years in the system and retire at 65 to achieve a 90% pension - and a lot of professors could never reach that point even if they stayed for their entire careers as they don't tend to start in their late 20's after master's and PhD's have been completed. It's a somewhat complicated sliding scale of years of service and age at retirement and, for example, 25 years of service at age 60 would yield less than 60%. Looking at the way the table works, I'd be surprised if the majority were higher than somewhere in the 50-60% range.

I don't have a plan, but I'm not necessarily asking for one. Protesters are demanding action, but the action they seek doesn't completely fit the bill. If this oil tax does indeed cover the costs, would it still cover costs if fees continue to increase? Does it tie the oil tax increase to a student fee increase? If not, it is only a short-term solution. In addition, I question the ability of this bill to be passed. Introducing the bill is one thing, lining up a majority of legislators to tax oil companies is another.

Also, if a tax is given to oil companies, is there any reason why they wouldn't pass that tax right on down to consumers in the way of increased gas prices? Oil companies have, in the past, increased gas prices due to government action and increased taxes. If that's true, than the entire state would essentially be paying for our tuition.

I am currently going to CSUS, and understand the pain of increased fees. It's horrible when you log into My Sac State to find that you owe $500 more dollars in the next week or you are dropped from your classes. It's messed up. That said, I also understand the structure of the state and how difficult it is to secure funding for just about anything, and I'm incredibly skeptical that a rally is going to do absolutely anything to change it.

As for saying that not everyone had college paid for, every CSUS student does have their college paid for. The state of California subsidizes our fees heavily. $2500 does not cover the cost of one semester. You can be guaranteed that the state loses thousands for every student that walks on campus. The $2500 you pay is but a fraction of the cost the state incurs so that you can receive a college degree. According to the CSU website, it costs over $11000 a year to attend CSU if you're not a state citizen, which means that our $5000 is less than half the amount of our education. The state already pays for us.

Also, the protesters fail to justify why they deserve state funding over other institutions and programs that are getting cut in the state. What about the medical coverage that's being cut? Policeman and firefighters? Why should students, who are already funded heavily by the state, get prioritized?

I understand the pain of increased fees and furlough days, but I also see the bigger picture. Until the protesters justify their place in that picture, I remain skeptical about the effect of a rally on the capitol.

The proposed new tax will not be passed down to consumers. The higher education system in California is broken and something needs to be done. Not everyone had college paid for.

What about the unseen effects of an oil severance tax? CSUS has a huge commuter base, and if the tax results in raised gas prices, that will affect a huge portion of the student population.

I would like to see some reaction from the state politicians, but I would also like to see a better solution from the CTA and students. Raising taxes on oil companies is the answer? I need more convincing.

Mardi Gras February 20-21 2010 11-5pm
Join the Solomon Wine Company the home of Muse, Garsa, and Cloud 9 wines for our Mardi Gras party in the Clarksburg tasting room. We are paring our Muse Carnivale Sangria, Garsa Syrah and Tempranillo with traditional foods of the New Orleans Mardi Gras festival. There will be Kings Cake, Louisiana Style Pork BBQ, Cole Slaw and Jambalaya. All go famously with our chilled sangria served with orange slices.
This event has no charge, includes great food, wine and music.
Mardi Gras means fat Tuesday, Fat Tuesday is a last chance party excuse before a six-week period of abstinence, and residents of New Orleans, Louisiana, are famous for their Mardi Gras celebrations and parades.
No Mardi Gras celebration is complete without a King Cake, also known as Twelfth Night Cake. This cake is actually a sweetened yeast bread, usually baked in a ring shape. The cake is frosted with gold, green, and purple icing representing in order, power, faith, and justice.

The President doesn't have a role is approving academic year faculty furlough days at Sac State (except for the one day he picked for each semester). They are approved by college Deans with Department Chairs providing some input (to ensure that specific classes or other responsibilities aren't disproportionately affected).

On some campuses the Presidents have designated more of the faculty furlough days than at Sac State.

The $16m "savings" realized by furloughs during the 2009-2010 year (which is approximately equivalent to the cost of 3,000 sections) is specific to Sac State only, not the system.

Furloughs were reluctantly agreed upon by the facutly in an attempt to prevent layoffs. Furlough days are selected by faculty, but approved through department chairs and the president.
The 3,000 figure is CSU wide, which equals an increase of roughly 175 sections, most for lower division. Upper division classes were cut 7%.

There aren't that many days when virtually the entire school shuts down as the faculty have a different union and self-select all but one of their furlough days each semester. For example, this semester has only one date on which faculty, staff and administrative furlough days coincide.

The faculty and main staff unions voluntarily agreed to furlough and, collectively, temporarily saved an amount of money that might otherwise have caused the student fee increase to be twice as high. Using a different comparison, the $16m saved through furloughs represents about 3,000 class sections.

I attended the open house and I was impressed. I spent a lot of time talking with the probation department employees, asking how the changes affect their safety (all positive).

I also spent the most time talking with their food services manager -- he had pictures of meals he and his team made over the past several weeks, including their nutritional analysis. I walked away with the impression that he is very good at what he does and is very quality and cost conscious.

I also had some quality time with the school principal. We talked about the challenges and the success stories his school has had over the years.

Showers and toilets are individual stalls but they have doors and walls that are lower and smaller. They afford the inmates a respectable amount of privacy while giving staff enough visibility to ensure nothing nefarious is going on.

The only thing we didn't see were the inmates themselves. That was, of course, by design.

I appreciated the opportunity to have a good long look inside the facility.

Now, while I'm a very good cook, I am in no way a gourmet, even though I shop from Taylor's and Corti's, and spend a considerable amount of time in SF and NYC eateries. I've also been to Italy a number of times, and have had the real deal in terms of the country's indigenous food.

Biba's seems to me to be amazingly overpriced, serving teeny tiny portions for what is paid, and snootily snobbish in its attitude and environs. There only seems affectation among its offerings rather than genuine sustenance and casual elegance and good hearty Italianized fare...

I won't be returning...

If you don't want to see violent entertainment at ARCO, don't go to see a UFC fight. If an event is offensive to you, you do not have to attend it. There are all kinds of events that take place at ARCO arena which I have no interest in, doesn't mean it can't exist. If fighting is not your thing.......maybe you should be on the look out for the 2010 Festival of hugs and warm wishes

Arco Arena is just a venue for different entertainment options in the Sacramento region. Ostracizing a particular event that someone finds violent (their personal opinion) would discriminate against the thousands of fans who enjoy the sport. A new arena will revitalize the downtown area and give Sacramentans uncensored access to their favorite sports.
