About Me

I graduated summa cum laude from CSU Sacramento with a B.A. in Government Journalism. My focus is on local government, politics and public policy issues. People in every community are affected by the actions of their local government and I feel it's important for citizens to be informed of what their leaders are doing and how those leaders are being held accountable. I also believe everyone has something valuable to contribute to their community. Using the contributions of every neighbor makes our communities stronger and enhances our city.

Mayor, NBA Commissioner release adjusted arena timeline

Mayor Kevin Johnson and NBA Commissioner David Stern released a joint statement today outlining an updated timeline for finalizing terms of a new arena deal for Sacramento. According to the release, the city of Sacramento and the NBA are continuing “constructive discussions” on the details of a financing plan for a new entertainment and sports complex. Johnson said at his weekly press conference Tuesday that details of a completed financing term sheet were expected to be available to the public by Thursday, in advance of a Feb. 28 City Council discussion and vote on the plan. Wednesday’s press release, however, offers an adjusted timeline in an effort to “ensure adequate time for public

City bid to host 2022 Olympics: New arena will be a factor

As Sacramento prepares to bid to host the 2022 Winter Olympic games, having the right venues on offer – such as a new entertainment and sports complex – will be a key factor to a successful bid. Representatives from the California Winter Games Committee reported to the City Council Tuesday about progress the committee is making to join the bidding process to become a host city. The committee is a volunteer group composed of both state and local civic, business and labor leaders and is working in conjunction with a similar committee from the Lake Tahoe area. Jake Mossawir, chief financial officer for the CWGC, said the group has been polling residents, researching historical data and rev

Medical marijuana advocates push for November ballot initiative

Signature gathering began this month for a new ballot initiative aimed at allowing medical marijuana dispensaries to operate in Sacramento despite a recent ban on cannabis-related operations in the county. The “Patient Access to Regulated Medical Cannabis Act of 2012” is the product of the newly established Committee for Safe Patient Access to Regulated Cannabis (CSPARC), organized by local medical marijuana industry advocate Mickey Martin. “In December when the Board of Supervisors passed the back-door ban on medical marijuana, there were a lot of people (who felt that) what they were passing was just bad policy,” Martin said Monday. “(The policy) just doesn’t address the issue,” Marti

Warren campaign signs may be possible election rules violation

The June election is more than three months away, but one City Council candidate is already being accused of breaking election rules. According to the city elections code, campaign signs cannot be put up until 90 days before the election – which for the upcoming June election would be March 9. City Council District 2 candidate Allen Wayne Warren’s signs were on display in the windows of a building on the 2300 block of Del Paso Boulevard Friday afternoon. Sources say the campaign signs have been in the windows of the building since at least Jan. 20 – shortly after he officially announced his candidacy. The building is home to his campaign headquarters office. According to city spokesma

Election costs explained

The upcoming June election is estimated to cost the city a whopping $250,000 – more than the current average price of a 3-bedroom house in Sacramento – and the November election may come with an even higher price tag. What makes an election so expensive? For starters, the number of registered voters eligible to participate in the election has an impact on the cost. According to Campaign Services Manager Brad Buyse, the county Office of Elections – the entity responsible for managing all elections in Sacramento County – uses a formula based on the most recent election and applies it to the number of registered voters to come up with a starting point. The most recent election was 2010, so

Conversation about: Progress Report on The Arena

The mayor said he expects the term sheet to be available by Thursday, a few days ahead of the Feb 28 council meeting. It has to pass through a few hands first, including city manager office and city attorney office then to city clerk office to be posted for the public. Still, Johnson seemed confident at the presser that Thursday would be the day. We'll see.

Conversation about: Medical marijuana advocates push for November ballot initiative

Correction: The act does not zone dispensaries 1000 ft from residences, as that would likely be nowhere. It is 1,000 ft. from schools, playgrounds, and youth oriented facilities in accordance with Federal statutes related to drug free zones. Thank you for clarifying that, Mr. Martin

Conversation about: Election costs explained

Lisa, thank you for your comment. The June election is the primary election -a regularly scheduled election. The charter review question is not slated for the June election, rather for the November (general) election. In every election cycle there are both primary and general elections. In the city contests for offices such as mayor and city council, if a candidate for office wins 50 percent plus 1 of the vote, they win the seat. If no candidate takes that majority, there is a "run-off" contest between the top two vote-getters. For contests that are measures or initiatives, no run-off opportunity is necessary. The measure either passes or fails. I hope that helps answer your question. -Melisss

Conversation about: Op-Ed: Consider the costs of a charter review commission

YouWantWhat – You are absolutely correct. There is an opportunity for the people to say "no" to the initial question on the ballot of "Do you want an elected charter review commission?" In fact, voters will have to answer that first. On the same ballot will be X-number of candidates for the 15 open slots on an elected commission, just in case the majority votes "yes" to the question. Regardless of the results of the first question, it looks like we will still be in for a circus of campaigning and special interest "propaganda" before all is said and done. I'm not saying the SMI proposal is better or worse (or that there are no costs associated with it as compared to an elected charter commission). I'm definitely not saying that a rejection of an elected charter review commission would equate to "complete vindication" of the last three+ years of SMI effort. An elected charter review commission could do many things: Overhaul the charter. Tweak the charter. Leave the charter untouched. Or, they could very well – on their own – come up with precisely the same framework that was the final incarnation of SMI on Feb 7. In any of those cases, (a) messy election leading up to it, (b) potential for 'stacked' commission, (c) unknown result, (d) costs associated with two years of effort.
