I better get there soon. I notice this trend recently of places opening with a bang and then gradually fizzle out. They come in with awesome ideas and top quality ingredients and everyone loves it. Then it's like people just want really cheap drinks and mediocre food and the owners decide they have to scale back then after not too long it's just not that interesting. It's like the right culture exists in the area, but people just refuse to spend good money on good food made by good chefs and farmers.

I wanted to go to this show, but I went to an all-day concert instead. This was a really good knowledgeable and succinct write up. Watching old Carlin bits on Netflix recently, I can definitely see the influence he has on some of my favorite comedians such as Maher. I hadn't made the Twain associations, but I do appreciate them. I love when I read and find a connection that someone else has made and it resounds a connection in my head that had been floating there, and not yet resolved due to lack of attention or time spent on the material

Have you ever boxed? The strategy involved is a lot like chess. Sometimes you throw a jab just to set up an uppercut combo three or four moves down the line. Is chess fighting? If you use your mind and not your body to fight, then it is OK? Don't be so judgmental, and you sound like a nerd.

I just hope that we've learned from last year. Drivers and cyclists need to be educated in a way that doesn't increase animosity and segregationist sentiments. Remember, last year 4 cyclists were killed by motorists during Bike Month. If there is going to be an increase in biking, there needs to be an increased awareness of bikers' rights and driver safety.

Thank you. This is so helpful. Earlier this week I was looking for any kind of guide online similar to this. I didn't want to have to search each venue or go pick up the snooze. I really want to go to the Coachella Festival, but it's not that easy of a spot to get to. i guess I'd have to fly into Ontario and then somehow get on the 10 and go into Coachell. Not to mention that a ticket for the three-day event is like $260. Anyway, I'm rambling. I wonder if they move the arena downtown, if more bands would go. I'm sure more people would walk and bike to the shows. i love the local music scene, but I want to see bands like Muse, Gorillaz and Jay-Z more often, you know. If I want to see bands like that it's like I have to plan a bunch of days off to get to s.f. or oakland and even then i'm reliant on someone else to be able to get a ticket so i can get a ride. it's bologna, i say!

Note that farmers and farm workers are not the same people. Back a few years ago when there was a big citrus freeze everyone was worried about the farmers, including Arnold the Barbarian who went to the central valley and tried to alleviate their financial woes. The media was all over the story of the farmer's strife, but no one seemed to give a shit about the farm workers. Whether it was just ignorance - a lack of awareness about the farm workers - or just a general xenophobia - most farm workers are immigrants - I am not sure. But it is great to see Steinberg step up to speak on their behalf. He is indeed one of our better legislators.

How about we acknowledge this inane yo-yo response to the K street situation. We wanted to bring business to the strip so we closed t off to traffic, now we want to bring business in so we are going to open it up to traffic. You want to know what K St. will be like if you open it up to traffic, look at any other street in the city. It would be expensive way to totally ignore the underlying issues of the problem.

Are we going to bring people to K St. so they can stare at a bunch of empty buildings? When I first moved here I had a strange experience on the K St. mall. When approaching on foot from far away the area looked impressive, but then when I walked up to the interesting buildings I found that they were vacant. Not just one or two, but it seemed like more than half of them were empty. It was like, oh neat what's that over there could be a sweet coffee shop or art gallery. Nope just another deserted building. People that visit from out of town and even a few comedians I've seen at the Punch Line have commented on and been turned off by the strangeness of all the empty buildings on K St.

And now the building that are filled are filled with crap. I mean aside from The Crest, Marilyn's, I guess Imax, The Blade, and now The Cosmopolitan, and I guess Esquire Grill, everything else is pure junk. I don't see how such an expensive proposal is justified to bring people to six places. Places they can reach easier the way it is now.

Harshly insensitive and short-sighted. The world that these people live in is so far removed from your scope of reality. Judging you by your response you and I are similar in that we would likely never go homeless because of the circle of support that we have built around us.
For some people a crippling sense of paranoia keeps them from following these social norms due to progressive mental illness. That is just one easy example of the unique problems that lead people down this path. Yet, others never had support and that coupled with other problems they never had a chance. Some were even raised in feral environments. Obviously trespassing is illegal, but in the broader spectrum these people are criminalized and thus further marginalized.
Putting it in such simple terms saying that these people have no homes because they have all made bad decisions is quite unfair. Again the easiest cause to point at is mental illness and lack of treatment, although it is far more multi-dimensional than that. With that said I worry about how the state seems to be ignoring the rise in dementia cases. With this lack of preparation we will soon see a severe increase in elderly homelessness among people with progressive degenerative cognitive disease.

Sweet. I went to one of the studio shows. It was whole different feel then the shows at the Convention Center. Both had their merits. The Modern Masters in the Convention Center was awe-inspiring with the dancers bounding across the stage as if it was a black canvas painted by light and figures of divine line, form and movement. The studio show had no set and not much for lighting, but there was an intimacy there the dancers took on a less objective and more human form. I am looking forward to seeing them at the crest, especially for Peter & the Wolf I've always loved that story.

There is an element of counter-culture mentality to the whole thing. It is youth-oriented probably because as we get older most of us do fewer stupid things, just part of the maturation process. But I digress, the fixed gear bike is modeled after a track bike. Track bikes have no brakes beause they are raced in a velodrome. Velodromes are oval steeply banked tracks with a smooth surface, absent of stop signs, cars and people.
Fixed gear bikes generally look cooler than the modern road bikes at least to me and my peers it seems. However the riders that are protecting their image by riding brakeless are hurting the rest of us by painting this uncooperative, defiant picture of cyclists. We are losing respect from drivers and pedestrians who don't see any of this history or art theory. They see a bunch of kids breaking a simple straight-forward law. To them and even most cyclists this is just stupid. This loss of respect creates a dangerous environment on the road for everybody. A true purist would know the laws through and through and make an effort to respect them and fellow road cohabitants.

Yeah, me too. Why open yourself to the cops and give them a reason to stop you? Sounds like a buzz kill and a sure-fire way to be late. Not to mention the time wasted clearing the ticket. There are stylish ways to incorporate a front brake into a fixie. Some of the minimalism is lost. But you can go fast, knowing that you can stop suddenly if you have to, and no one will notice. At any rate, if these fix-it tickets generate revenue and weed the gene pool then by all means: to hell with brakes.

I have never liked the idea of video surveillance. Yet, when I was hit by a car on my bicycle I really wished a traffic camera had caught it. I called traffic investigations to see if any traffic cameras were in the area; there weren't. Additionally, I found out that most of the traffic cameras - not the motion sensor ticket dispensers - currently installed are not even operating due to budget restraints.
I think that most people would benefit from the cameras. But it still doesn't sit well with me. There is always the fear of it gradually being taken too far. Soon the city will justify installing cameras to surveil low-income housing.

Sounds like a great idea. I just got nailed by a car on my bike over by J and 22nd. I was following the law and the driver just didn't expect to hit me. My '79 Team Fuji road bike was thrashed and my foot smashed. It healed but there was still the matter of reimbursement. After pursuing an uncooperative driver to no avail I called Sac Area Bicycle Advocates and they suggested I contact a lawyer and gave a recommendation.
At any rate, Making streets friendly to cyclists and walkers can be done. Best Life, a men's magazine, just had an article on simple ways to do such a thing. It also covers the benefits of doing so, they cover everything from improved health and thus lower healthcare costs to increases in shopping and jobs.

I never use the brake, but it's there. People, including cyclists, forget that bikes are vehicles. That is not good for the cause. I wonder, will cars with no headlights catch on? Yeah maybe some of my driving comrades will go for a sleek, stealth look, take out their headlights, and put black anodized plates over the holes. And then they can complain about the cops and act surprised when they get stopped, and we can all have a discussion about it. That would be sick and minimalist.

I defiantly feel more safe here in sac than i do in either SF or NY. If we were to increase police which would drain funds from other uses, they should be on foot and friendly. I surely agree that the bus system could use improvements such as more frequent stops. But again it comes to funding. I believe our transit system is good, but say that to someone from DC and they will disagree. Our transit system is good, but any world-class city has an excellent system.

Being a former teen I alone can say that many if not all teens like live music very loud. Are these shows going on everyday, once a week, once a month? I am close to saying, "Let the kids have their loud-ass show." However I don't want to negate the accumulation of noise, crime and general discord that it may give way to.

Teens generally don't have much money. Maybe in the early to mid-nineties kids were walking around with more of their parents extra cash, but not so much right now. Therefore there is not much interest in exploiting them and draining their miniscule funds. Acknowledging their boredom and harboring it in a safe environment definitely benefits the community. I agree that tolerance as well as courtesy are crucial. Finding a pleasant balance would be quite nice.
