Fashion Shows have been evolving in Sacramento for quite some time now. Fashion designers have been creating their pieces of art in Sacramento for a reason, and models seem to have a desire and reason for "starting out" in Sacramento. Who, what, when, where and why did this ultimate need of fashion in Sacramento start? I decided to do some research to see where it all started.

One of the first fashion shows was created in a parking garage off of 28th and S Streets by fashion designers Olivia Coelho, owner of Bows & Arrows Boutique, and Amy Hemmenes, designer of Naicfur, in 2003. Noelle Tavares, fashion show creator and fashion designer, established Faedrah Clothing Company in 2004. Nicole Kniss, designer of Van Der Neer, first started doing fashion shows in 2004 as well. Magnum Opus Fashion Week started in 2006 and has been doing fashion shows every year. Sacramento Fashion Week officially started under Magnum Opus in 2008. Recently, Tavares presented "I Hella Love Fashion: Volume 1" and Michael Hargis, event coordinator and co-owner of VHCLE Magazine presented "Launch: A Design and Music Festival." Sacramento really does have something under its belt when it comes to fashion.

Models definitely had something to say about modeling in Sacramento. Jasmine Suzette, who recently modeled for Royal Highness in I Hella Love Fashion, said she believes that Sacramento is just a rest stop for her. She originally came out to Sacramento for school, but her friend encouraged her to model. Suzette eventually wants to move out to L.A. to further her modeling career.

Jasmine Suzette walks the runway at I Hella Love Fashion: Volume 1

Duane Mykha Ram, event coordinator of Sacramento Fashion Week and Manager of Model Casting, moved to Sacramento for a full-time job opportunity. He then got into Magnum Opus as a model and has been organizing and walking the runway in fashion shows since 2006.

"Modeling in Sacramento is a good start for learning, experience and training," Ram said.

Juliette Ciccarelle, who recently modeled in her second fashion show at Launch, has found modeling in Sacramento beneficial to her career. "I think it's great because you don't have to compete with a lot of people," Ciccarelle said.

Juliette Ciccarelle poses while getting her hair and make up done for LAUNCH's Fashion Show

From the various models I interviewed, I gathered that models seem to think of Sacramento as a "rest stop" for furthering their careers. It's a good place to start modeling as a hobby, but might not be profitable in getting paid as a full-time model unless you work with agents. Since most models do it for fun, not many of them get paid to walk in the local runway shows.

Fashion designers seem to have started out in Sacramento to feel out the industry and to establish their own designs in their hometown. Tavares didn't start sewing until she was 21 and went to Sacramento City College for a semester. Her instructors were impressed with her skills, so she decided to start Faedrah, following her instincts in fashion design.

"My first fashion show was at Infusion Cafe in 2004, and I've been creating fashion shows ever since," Tavares said. "Especially after creating I Hella Love Fashion Volume 1, my whole fashion show aspect has been growing. I'm actually planning Volume 2 right now, and it's in the works of being in November."

Noelle Tavares with her models wearing her most recent designs

Amy Pine, who was a vendor at Launch recently, said that she lived in Sacramento and wanted to start her designs here. She said she thinks that Sacramento is progressively taking small steps to becoming its own fashion industry. Pine said she believes that fashion shows are a great way of getting people out there, especially in Sacramento.

Amy Pine, vending at LAUNCH

Nina Brown, who is originally from Montreal, is a designer of Brown Skin Designs. She moved to Sacramento in February, and said she wasn't worried at all about being a fashion designer in Sacramento. She likes the urban twist and the smalltown fashion that the city presents.

Nicole Kniss, designer of Van Der Neer, who was one of the headliners at Launch, decided to do fashion in Sacramento because of the crowd. With her start in 2004, she has seen fashion shows progress since then and has said that designers are skyrocketing through these shows.

Being the first designer to start a fashion show in Sacramento, Amy Hemmenes originally did it as a practical joke. She didn't think it was going to get serious, but once it did, she became part of the history of fashion in Sacramento.

Hemmenes and her fellow fashion designer friends are proud of themselves, but also laugh at it now. Fashion designers seem to all have an explanation of how and why they started out in Sacramento, and these fashion shows are just one of the main fundamental strengths as to why they are typically doing so well out here.

Michael Hargis was the one to come up with the idea of creating Launch. He wanted to present all the fashions that VHCLE Magazine wrote about during a live event. Reject, Van Der Neer, Velvet Leaf and Altered Betty's were all presented at Launch's fashion show.

Jen Wade, fashion editor of VHCLE Magazine, modeling for Velvet Leaf at LAUNCH

Launch is just one of the recent fashion shows that have been building up a big history for Sacramento. Coming up next is a free event called A Free Creative & Collaborative Open Air Fashion Show. It will be held at 7 p.m. Aug. 8, at 2419 J St. (Outside, in front of French Cuff Consignment.) So, keep your eye out for fashion shows like these that help Sacramento build a great reputation for fashion.

For the most part, the students, stylists and boutique owners have the same anecdotes as the models. They want to start out here but eventually branch out. Having these talented individuals start in Sacramento not only helps the student's fashion experience as a whole, but also our city.

Keturah Stone, originally from the Bay Area, moved to Sacramento for school. One might think that someone who was close to San Francisco would want to stay there and start, but she admits that there are some hidden gems in Sacramento.

Stone moved out here to attend Sacramento State University as a family and consumer science major, which happens to be one of the only bachelor's degrees you can get that's related to fashion at Sacramento State. She said she believes that the style between the Bay Area and Sacramento is typically different, but it's evolved a lot more here in Sacramento.

Michelle Singleton, a student at Sacramento City College who is currently studying fashion, said she feels that Sacramento isn't a huge city, but its fashion can become better, and that it has a lot of potential.

"I feel that the motivation and persistence is what gets me starting in Sacramento," Singleton said. The crowd, the big group of fashion designers, and the fashion shows that keep happening are what keep her going. She eventually wants to transfer to San Francisco State to get her bachelor's degree in apparel design and merchandising.

Michelle Singleton with friends at LAUNCH

Cuffs Boutique Store Manager Mel Elagon, stated that a lot has changed in terms of getting involved in fashion in Sacramento.

"I believe that fashion shows bring things that aren't as available in a mall or online," Elagon said. She went on to say that fashion shows are a way to show people that what they can't find in a mall can be found in Sacramento and they need not travel to big cities such as Los Angeles or San Francisco. Elagon thinks that fashion is more of a research and success project here in Sacramento, and she encourages others to start here because it's worthwhile.

After research and interviews with designers, models and students, I've found that Sacramento is a great place to start your fashion career. The history of fashion in Sacramento is slowly growing, and fashion-related events such as fashion shows are happening almost every weekend. Maybe one day Sacramento will have its own Union Square or Rodeo Drive equivalent.

Valerie Hart, owner of online fashion boutique itsMySecret, loves to be a vendor during the Second Saturday Art Walk.

At 71 years old, Valerie Hart had a lot of challenges in starting an online business, so she enlisted the help of her husband, Dennis Hart, a photographer and computer guru.

Even though her boutique is online, she vendors at Second Saturday selling accessories for women such as bags, jewelry, belts and watches. She orders her merchandise from other fashion designers around the U.S. and caters toward the youthful crowd with merchandise that is more affordable.

"We really didn't feel like we wanted to have another type of store to walk into," she said. "We realized that the future really is online and people are gravitating to that."

itsMySecret started out with high-quality products from designers, but Hart is the one who makes all of the decisions.

"It's controlled by us, we don't have landlords, we don't have people telling us what to do," she said. "Once we've purchased our merchandise, it's basically ours. We show it the way we want to on the website. We can change the ideas and the concept of it. I like the creativity of that."

Hart's online fashion boutique got its name while she and her husband were driving.

"I've always loved gardening and so I've always wanted a secret garden," she said. "One time, Dennis and I were driving and I say, 'Oh! I just found a name for the business!' and he says, 'What is it?' and so I say, 'Shhh, It's My Secret.' In a way, it could be different, but I like it because of the curiosity. It could be sheets and blankets, it can be anything."

Hart's son, Paul, tipped them off about the Second Saturday Art Walk. He invited his parents to come up in May to see what it was like.

Valerie fell in love with it. So, Paul did a little PR work and talked to Michael Kennedy, owner of Kennedy Art Gallery on 20th and K right next to Head Hunters. With a few e-mails, contacts and picture-sending, the Harts were able to vend right outside of Kennedy's Gallery during the June Second Saturday.

Coming from San Mateo, she chose to become a vendor for Second Saturday because of the youthfulness and artistic influence in Sacramento.

"The young people here that keep the city growing and changing is just really delightful," she said. "They're hungry for it, and they want fashion. Sacramento is really progressive with fashion."

This Saturday, Hart expects Sacramentans to see a lot of different merchandise and displays from the last Second Saturday. "As a vendor, we want to change the look and everything," she said. "The first one allowed us to look and see what people are really looking for. We want to bring really different items that people in Sacramento are looking for."

"We want to basically have a boutique on wheels. We are really focused on having an outside boutique," Dennis said.

itsMySecret will be vending this Second Saturday outside of the Kennedy Art Gallery at 2110 K Street.

The Refuge is an all-ages venue where young musicians can play and show off their talent. These concerts are held at St. John's Lutheran Church off of L Street in Midtown.

The venue gives a concert-like feel where the audience can stand up and dance right in front of the performers. It also gives a cafe-like feel with a lounge area, chairs, couches and umbrellas. There's also a snack and coffee bar called Cafe Rwanda where all proceeds go to the Mumea Hospital project in Rwanda.

"We have two goals," said Amy Chance, organizer of The Refuge, "to create an all-ages club where anyone can enjoy a concert and to create a venue where young musicians can play. They get the advantage to play somewhere with no age limit."

"Brett's band, Dead Scott, won the Jammie and he played at Club Retro in Orangevale. A kid or a parent said, 'Why don't we have a club like that.' That's where we stimulated the idea of having an all-ages club here in Midtown," said Darren Zinzer, director of Youth Industries and St. John's Lutheran Church.

The Refuge is starting these concerts on a trial basis. As long as the venue doesn't lose money, organizers will keep it going and do it more regularly in the fall.

"After these three trial shows, we want to see how it goes. If it's good, we expect it to be going on indefinitely until December," Zinzer said.

All-ages is the main goal of the Refuge. "It's a safe place for teens to hang out from 7-11 p.m. on Friday nights," Zinzer said. "Parents can know that they can drop their kids off and that there will be parents and kids around to supervise. We don't sell alcohol, and it's all about hanging out for four hours."

On Friday, Will Craig performed as a musician for his first time. "It was a blast, I had a lot of fun performing tonight. My grandpa use to play and so I just decided to play after he died. I jumped in and here I am tonight, and it's awesome," Craig said.

Crimson Sky, a newly-formed band, also played Friday night. Crimson Sky threw out a lot of energy as the second performance.

The bass player was originally from The Squires, until the band fell apart and he created a new band called Crimson Sky.

"It felt great playing tonight," said Eric Childs, guitar player. "A lot of the audience got involved." Crimson Sky found out about The Refuge through playing at The Jammie at the Crest Theatre where members met other young musicians who helped them play everywhere.

Local band Method Echo was the kick-line, the band that everyone came out to see, on Friday night at The Refuge. Method Echo and Crimson Sky played together at The Concert in the Park at Cesar Chavez Park and got booked together at The Refuge.

"It was cool performing here. I didn't know what to expect tonight but the crowd filled up, and we just love to perform. If it's in front of ten people or a thousand people, we give all we've got. Performing in front of these teens at a church is great," said Josh Guerrero, lead singer of Method Echo.

The Refuge ended the night with a performance from Dawson & Marie. "We played at Borders in Roseville for an open-mic competition and Phillip, the sound person here at The Refuge, heard us play and he asked us to play here tonight," Marleena Sheetz said, guitarist and singer from Dawson & Marie. "The Refuge is really cute, I guess that's the one word I can describe it. It's cool for people to just kick back. I mean, there's really no place like this in Sacramento that's all ages.&quot

The Refuge has one more definite show with live music from Autumn Sky, The Shreds, Josiah James, Dead Scott and Northern Lights on Frday, July 17. The Refuge is located at 1723 L St. The cover charge is $8 and the concert will be held from 7-11 p.m. For more information visit www.myspace.com/therefugesac

“Who doesn’t love Christmas in June?”

Nicole Rivelli, team member of Walt Disney Studio’s Special Events,

posed this question when asked about the timing of Disney’s “A
Christmas Carol” Train Tour stop in Sacramento.

This weekend will mark the seventh stop for Disney’s train on its 40-city tour.

Sacramento native and president of the Walt Disney Picture Group, Mark
Zoradi, wished everyone a “Merry Christmas” as he introduced the
interactive walk-through train tour being held at the California State
Railroad Museum.

The train is filled with costumes, flat-screen TVs with commentaries
from all the characters, including Producer Robert Zemeckis, and a
behind-the-scenes peek of how the digital 3D film was made.

One of the most appealing attractions is the "Face Morph" station.
Children and adults use Hewlett Packard Touchsmart PCs to take a
picture of their faces and have them morphed into characters from the
film.

A 50-foot by 50-foot-tall 3D theater allowed attendees a 10-minute
preview of the film, which is still in the process of being filmed.

“I think Robert's goal was to stay true to what Dickens wrote, so when
you see Disney's "A Christmas Carol," it's going to be like seeing "A
Christmas Carol" for the first time.” Rivelli said.

The train tour will continue to travel the country, hitting 26 states
altogether.

“It's a five-month tour, so we started in May. We're going to have
Christmas all summer, but when we end, it'll be in November – right
when the film releases – so it's all kind of culminating up to the
film release,” Rivelli said.

Since its start in Los Angeles, the attraction has gotten phenomenal reactions.

"L.A. had five-hour lines. Denver [and] Albuquerque had three-hour
lines. So I think that being able to see … Disney … when they would
normally have to come out to Orange County to see it, or all the way
to Florida, the fact that we're bringing a little Disney magic to
them, they love it,” Rivelli said.

"It was definitely an easy decision to make it stop in Sacramento,”
Rivelli said. “I mean, look at it, the old town is the perfect
backdrop for this train.”

The Disney train tour highlights a part of history from Dickens’ time
and brings a book to life that has played a huge part in classical
literature.

The train tour will end in November, right in time for the movie
release on Nov. 6.

"It's Tuesday night inside de Vere's Irish Pub, and a majority of its patrons are scribbling on napkins with Sharpies.

It shouldn't come as much of a surprise that these scribblers are architects, interior designers, graphic artists, photographers and other creative individuals who meet as a part of Capital Creative Collective.

Capital Creative Collective is a creative group that has been around for almost a year. They meet on Tuesday nights once a month for what is known as Designer Pint Nights at de Vere's in Downtown Sacramento to socialize, make friends and have a drink. CCC is also a blog.

"Capital Creative Collective's Designer Pint Nights was created to help the hippest, hottest and most innovative people connect face-to-face, and it is the single best place to meet some of Sacramento's most talented individuals and teams," said Jake Favour, founder of the CCC.

"The monthly Pint Night is a great way to meet other Sacramento creative's in a casual environment. There is no formal structure, just a group of folks learning about what we do, sharing ideas, stories and developing friendships, said Mike Whisten, who attends Designer Pint Nights and is a member of CCC.

"We will do a "Napkin Battle" where Jake throws out a design situation and everyone has 5 minutes to create a solution. That is a lot of fun with some hilarious solutions and some really creative solutions as well.”

Sometimes the benefits of attending Designer Pint Nights are surprising. "We had a guy who was there for the first time, and by the end of the night, he started his career."

CCC hopes to put on design battles and to become a venue for designers to voice ideas.

"Let's say the city gives a problem," Favour said. "We would hold a competition for the designers to fix that problem. Whether it's the Light Rail needing some addition help, or something to do with the bike trails. It's all about the designers voicing their creativity towards a stronger voice. They need to open more source solutions and become more proactive in Sacramento."

In the future, Favour hopes that CCC becomes a full-fledged website for the creative community. It will be a tool that will work alongside the city of Sacramento to help new stores, new buildings, etc.

"Capital Creative Collective just had a Design Battle at MARRS on the last Second Saturday (in May)," he said. " I can see CCC being a part of the Second Saturday Art Walk."

The Designer Pint Nights are on the second Tuesday of every month at de Vere's Irish Pub at 1521 L Street. For more information on CCC, check out the blog at capitalcreativecollective.wordpress.com.

Trisha Rhomberg and Olivia Coelho, owners of the Bows & Arrows Boutique, held their second Sellout Buyout Art & Fashion Bazaar of the year during June's Second Saturday Art Walk. Bows & Arrows is a vintage store that buys, sells and trades all fashion trends. It is located at 1712 L Street in midtown Sacramento.

The Sellout Buyout event allows local Sacramento artists and designers to have a place to sell some of their creations and to network with other designers.

“My partner Olivia and I wanted to showcase local talent and have people own clothes and accessories from Sacramento designers,” said Rhomberg. “It’s a great opportunity for them to get all the profit from the sales without going retail,” she said.

Rhomberg and Coelho have been doing Sellout Buyout since 2003, four times a year. They first started at Body Tribe, moved to a salon and then moved to Fool’s Foundation before opening Bows & Arrows in November of 2007.

“The Sellout Buyout event is very close to my heart," said Coelho. "It’s the first thing I did in Sacramento."

The Sellout Buyout event this Second Saturday had a mix of artists in different areas, including Tina Leanne Jewelry and Fine Arts, Kristina McClanahan, Archradish, Kewish Designs, etc.

“This was my first time at the Sellout Buyout event,” said Tina Leanne. “I came out here three months ago for Second Saturday. I first got into jewelry when I first went on a missions trip to New Orleans. It was really disturbing. I went there five weeks after (Hurricane Katrina). I took pictures and God gave me the inspiration to become an artist. People gave me some beads and here I am.”

Tina first found out about the Sellout Buyout from her friend, Lisa Elliott, who was also there to support the creations and designs of her daughter. Her daughter was there to sell all the designs they sewed, from clothes to handbags and accessories.

“I’m a paper artist and I also sew. I normally do gallery shows,” said McClanahan. “I’m a normal customer of Bows & Arrows and this is my first time actually showcasing my work. I think there’s a lot of traffic and I’ve been okay with sales.”
