Fashion Shows have been evolving in Sacramento for quite some time now. Fashion designers have been creating their pieces of art in Sacramento for a reason, and models seem to have a desire and reason for "starting out" in Sacramento. Who, what, when, where and why did this ultimate need of fashion in Sacramento start? I decided to do some research to see where it all started. One of the first fashion shows was created in a parking garage off of 28th and S Streets by fashion designers Olivia Coelho, owner of Bows & Arrows Boutique, and Amy Hemmenes, designer of Naicfur, in 2003. Noelle Tavares, fashion show creator and fashion designer, established Faedrah Clothing Company in 2004. Nicole
A dozen salons will compete in a six-week hair adventure which commences this Thursday and runs weekly through Sept. 3. Sactown Magazine and 100.5 The Zone present "Hair Wars: 2009," at The Park Ultra Lounge at 15th and L Streets. Each week, one of Sacramento's top salons will be competing on the runway. During last year's "Hair Wars: 2008," salon Rowena and Takashi reigned as champions. They will have an appearance during this year's Hair Wars on August 27. On July 30, the opening night, there will be a special appearance by Salon 701 with exclusive product gifts provided by PHYTO. Salon 701 will be competing with Taki Salon on the runway. The party will start at 9 p.m. with a runwa
Debbie Milanova picks her pieces of fashion based off of music. "Music, other fashion and what other people are wearing is what inspires me. I just like to wear whatever I like. I like to be edgy and do different things that other people don't. But, I totally love fashion all around." "I'm inspired by musicians such as Kanye West, Gwen Stefani, Andrew 3000. I look at their music videos, personal style to see what they are doing. I think they're very cutting edge, so I'm typically interested into what type of styles they do." Street Style: Tamerra Griffin Occupation: Sales Associate at Express in the Arden Fair Mall Neighborhood: Elk Grove Age: 19 Tamerra Griffin describes her fashion as "fun and bright." The bright colors of her outfit are reflected by her happy and energetic mood. Griffin's sense of style is really stands out because of her accessories. She says she can just wear jeans and a T-shirt, but at the same time, she wants to have something that stands out. Whether it's a belt or a piece of jewelry, she wants people to say, "Whoa, what is that?" I just always try to have at least one thing that makes the outfit not like something else you'd see walking down the street," Griffin said. Grif
Valerie Hart, owner of online fashion boutique itsMySecret, loves to be a vendor during the Second Saturday Art Walk. At 71 years old, Valerie Hart had a lot of challenges in starting an online business, so she enlisted the help of her husband, Dennis Hart, a photographer and computer guru. Even though her boutique is online, she vendors at Second Saturday selling accessories for women such as bags, jewelry, belts and watches. She orders her merchandise from other fashion designers around the U.S. and caters toward the youthful crowd with merchandise that is more affordable. "We really didn't feel like we wanted to have another type of store to walk into," she said. "We realized that th
The Refuge took on its second concert Friday with performances from Will Craig, Crimson Sky, Method Echo and Dawson & Marie. The Refuge is an all-ages venue where young musicians can play and show off their talent. These concerts are held at St. John's Lutheran Church off of L Street in Midtown. The venue gives a concert-like feel where the audience can stand up and dance right in front of the performers. It also gives a cafe-like feel with a lounge area, chairs, couches and umbrellas. There's also a snack and coffee bar called Cafe Rwanda where all proceeds go to the Mumea Hospital project in Rwanda. "We have two goals," said Amy Chance, organizer of The Refuge, "to create an all-ag
“Who doesn’t love Christmas in June?” Nicole Rivelli, team member of Walt Disney Studio’s Special Events, posed this question when asked about the timing of Disney’s “A Christmas Carol” Train Tour stop in Sacramento. This weekend will mark the seventh stop for Disney’s train on its 40-city tour. Sacramento native and president of the Walt Disney Picture Group, Mark Zoradi, wished everyone a “Merry Christmas” as he introduced the interactive walk-through train tour being held at the California State Railroad Museum. The train is filled with costumes, flat-screen TVs with commentaries from all the characters, including Producer Robert Zemeckis, and a behind-the-scenes peek of how the d
"It's Tuesday night inside de Vere's Irish Pub, and a majority of its patrons are scribbling on napkins with Sharpies. It shouldn't come as much of a surprise that these scribblers are architects, interior designers, graphic artists, photographers and other creative individuals who meet as a part of Capital Creative Collective. Capital Creative Collective is a creative group that has been around for almost a year. They meet on Tuesday nights once a month for what is known as Designer Pint Nights at de Vere's in Downtown Sacramento to socialize, make friends and have a drink. CCC is also a blog. "Capital Creative Collective's Designer Pint Nights was created to help the hippest, hottest

The Sellout Buyout event allows local Sacramento artists and designers to have a place to sell some of their creations and to network with other designers. “My partner Olivia and I wanted to showcase local talent and have people own clothes and accessories from Sacramento designers,” said Rhomberg. “It’s a great opportunity for them to get all the profit from the sales without go
