About Me

Hello! I am a student at San Francisco State University with a major in Journalism. I have a passion for writing and have a long lived dream of becoming a fashion journalist. I've had many opportunities as a student journalist, including working for: The Sacramento Bee, Shojo Beat Magazine, Novo Magazine, Acara Mia Magazine and a few others. I was born and raised in Sacramento and come here for the summer to stay with family and also to avoid paying loads of money on rent in San Francisco. As for now, I am an intern at The Sacramento Press. I am excited for this journey I am about to face as an intern and writer. I know I will be able to learn a lot of things about the journalism industry and what I can do to build up all the experience to help my career. I can be reached at lexi.tiongson@sacramentopress.com

Sacramento's Fashionable History

Fashion Shows have been evolving in Sacramento for quite some time now. Fashion designers have been creating their pieces of art in Sacramento for a reason, and models seem to have a desire and reason for "starting out" in Sacramento. Who, what, when, where and why did this ultimate need of fashion in Sacramento start? I decided to do some research to see where it all started. One of the first fashion shows was created in a parking garage off of 28th and S Streets by fashion designers Olivia Coelho, owner of Bows & Arrows Boutique, and Amy Hemmenes, designer of Naicfur, in 2003. Noelle Tavares, fashion show creator and fashion designer, established Faedrah Clothing Company in 2004. Nicole

Street Style: Debbie Milanova

Debbie Milanova picks her pieces of fashion based off of music. "Music, other fashion and what other people are wearing is what inspires me. I just like to wear whatever I like. I like to be edgy and do different things that other people don't. But, I totally love fashion all around." "I'm inspired by musicians such as Kanye West, Gwen Stefani, Andrew 3000. I look at their music videos, personal style to see what they are doing. I think they're very cutting edge, so I'm typically interested into what type of styles they do." Street Style: Tamerra Griffin

Street Style: Tamerra Griffin Occupation: Sales Associate at Express in the Arden Fair Mall Neighborhood: Elk Grove Age: 19 Tamerra Griffin describes her fashion as "fun and bright." The bright colors of her outfit are reflected by her happy and energetic mood.   Griffin's sense of style is really stands out because of her accessories. She says she can just wear jeans and a T-shirt, but at the same time, she wants to have something that stands out. Whether it's a belt or a piece of jewelry, she wants people to say, "Whoa, what is that?" I just always try to have at least one thing that makes the outfit not like something else you'd see walking down the street," Griffin said. G

Conversation about: Sacramento's Fashionable History

Thanks! And what has been in the past decade as not only been indie fashion, it's been an array of different fashion perspectives. Such as: urban and couture. Coelho and Hemmenes truly made a big effort and big difference for Sacramento's recent fashion history! I'm glad to have seen a big hipster scene growing on indie fashion because of them!

Conversation about: Sacramento's Fashionable History

Fashion truly DID exist before the past recent decade. It dates way way back to when Sacramento first started becoming a town. Fashion has always been a part of Sacramento. As William said, the K Street area has been around for what it seems like almost "forever" and it's been the "fashion" street of Sacramento.

Conversation about: Second Saturday Needs Volunteer Crossing Guards

I believe that it is really important for there to be crossing guards. Second Saturday is a great part of the month that all Sacramento residents look forward to. Without these crossing guards, Second Saturday would probably be at fault for not providing safety to all the residents of Sacramento. So, whether the crossing guards are volunteers or actual police, Second Saturday should always be a success.
